John F. Barry III is an American entrepreneur and philanthropist. He is the CEO of Prospect Capital Management, an alternative asset management company founded in 1988.[1] Prior to Prospect Capital, he had management careers with L.F. Rothschild and Merrill Lynch. Barry initially started his career as an attorney at Davis Polk & Wardwell and prior to this worked as a law clerk for J. Edward Lumbard.[2] He has sat on the boards of numerous organizations and served as Chairman of the Board at the Mathematics Foundation of America from 1999 until 2011.[2][3]

John Barry, along with his spouse, Daria Becker Barry, are supporters of numerous philanthropic efforts through their foundation, the John and Daria Barry Foundation.[4] Most notably, in 2017 the Foundation pledged $2.5 million over five years to the Prostate Cancer Foundation to establish the John and Daria Barry Precision Oncology Center of Excellence in Manhattan[5] and in 2018 gave $2 million to the Inner-City Scholarship Fund.[6][7][8]

Early life and education[edit]

John Barry is the son of John F. Barry Jr. and Rosemary Susan Quinn and is the second oldest of nine children.[9] He grew up in Westport, Connecticut and later on attended Princeton University where he was a University Scholar and received his B.A. as well as Harvard Law School where he received his JD and worked as an editor of the Harvard Law Review.[10]

Career[edit]

During his early career, Barry followed his father's path and worked first as a Law Clerk in the United States Court of Appeals and subsequently as a corporate securities attorney at Davis Polk & Wardwell advising energy companies.[9][2] He went on to become a Senior Investment and Merchant Banker at Merrill Lynch where he was a founding member of the Project Finance Group. Barry later on served as the Head of the Corporate Finance Department at L.F. Rothschild.[10]

In 1990 Barry joined Prospect Capital as a Managing Director. In 1998 the firm sold its high yield business, Prospect Street High Income, to Highland Capital Management. Subsequently, Barry took control of the venture capital practice in 1998 which managed the NYC Discovery Fund, the City's first venture capital fund to invest solely in New York City based emerging technology companies.[11] In 2004 Barry launched Prospect Capital Corporation which is managed by Prospect Capital and trades on NASDAQ under the ticker PSEC.[12]

Personal life[edit]

Barry is married to Daria Becker Barry who works as the Head of Administration at Prospect Capital.[13] Together they created the John and Daria Barry Foundation which pledged $2.5 million to establish the John and Daria Barry Center of Excellence to help address the needs of Veterans battling prostate cancer.[14]
