John Edward Garlock (January 4, 1924 – December 6, 2003) was an American missionary. He worked in Africa, including in Liberia and South Africa, and became a prominent Christian educator.[1]

Early life[edit]

John Edward Garlock was born on January 4, 1924, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. His parents, Henry Bruce Garlock and Ruth (Trotter) had become missionaries in Liberia in 1920, but had temporarily returned to the United States at the time of his birth. His parents first worked among the Pahns, a cannibalistic tribe, and later wrote a book about their experiences entitled Before We Kill and Eat You, published in 1974. Garlock was raised primarily in West Africa.[2][3]

Career[edit]

In 1949, he established the South African Bible Institute (SABI), a bible college in Brakpan.[4]

He was married to Earline (Rains),[5] who died in 1963. After her death he married Ruthann Garlock, a Christian author.[6][7]

Garlock died in Bulverde, Texas, on December 6, 2003.[8]
