The Honourable Justice John Allaster Halley is a judge of the Federal Court of Australia, sitting in the Sydney registry. He was appointed on 19 March 2021.[1][2]
Education and early career
Halley graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in 1983 and a Bachelor of Laws in 1985. He was admitted as a legal practitioner of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 1986 and practised as a solicitor at Allen Allen & Hemsley from 1986 to 1992. He was called to the New South Wales Bar in 1993 and appointed Senior Counsel in 2008.[1]
Judicial and tribunal service
Halley was appointed a judge of the Federal Court of Australia on 19 March 2021.[1] A ceremonial sitting to welcome him was held on 20 April 2021 and the transcript is published by the Court.[3] He serves as a Deputy President of the Australian Competition Tribunal and as a member of the Defence Force Discipline Appeal Tribunal.[4][5] The Australian Government Directory records his commission commencing on 19 March 2021 and notes his tribunal roles.[6]
