John Locco born in the 1950s is a retired school teacher, former Mayor of Brighton in Victoria, Australia and organiser of the swimming group the Brighton Icebergers.[1][2]
Career
Locco attended Saint Joan of Arc's Primary School in Brighton and then Christian Brothers college in St Kilda, soon to be renamed St Mary's college. Locco is a former school teacher having taught at Brighton Secondary College and Moorabbin City College, now Bentleigh Secondary College. [3] Locco was instrumental in preventing the Brighton swimming baths from being closed in Victoria during the 1980s after being elected to Brighton Council in 1984. Locco, in 1992 while Mayor of Brighton, was involved in a punch up with Brighton Baths manager Mark Greene that resulted in Greene's sacking. Locco and Greene had been friends in the past as they were both bouncers years before at a hotel.[4][5] Locco became Mayor in 1992 prior to Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett sacking local councils. Locco stated "Kennett decided in his socially demented way that everything had to be privatised."[1][6][7] The Icebergs, which Locco somewhat organises, are a group which have over a hundred members including former Premier of Victoria Ted Baillieu.[8] In 2010 Locco commented it was not unusual to see a shark of 2.5 metres close to the shore.[9] Locco stated in 2004 the motto of the club is “death to the wetsuit.”[10] Locco has supported Boxer Sam Soliman; like Locco, he was present for Soliman's German win in 2013 carrying Soliman on his shoulders prior to Soliman's victory being reverted due to Soliman testing positive.[2]
Locco was a guest with swimmer John Van Wisse at the Brighton Rotary club. Locco owned a horse with Bryan Roberts, another former member of the now abolished Brighton council, and the late Don Brown, a horse racer.[3][11]
Locco is the uncle of Michael Locco, the son of Frank and Debbie Locco.[12][not in citation given][13][not in citation given] Locco used to play football in the 1970s as a ruckman; he said "If I make it into the saints they will have to buy me contact lenses."[14][15]. [16][17][18][19] When a shark sighting came into the Brighton beach area Locco stated "It sounds as if it's come in for a feed of fish and then took off again,". [4]
Locco organises a group of the Icebergers when he noticed fewer people swimming in the afternoon. [5] Locco is the brother of Teresa Mcintosh, a school teacher too who retired in 2018. Locco was present at an event where alleged Liberal party branch stacker Marcus Bastiaan was elected chair of the Liberal party Goldstein Federal Electorate conference. Locco was friends with Terry Pritchard who died in 2019. Locco on many occasions takes place in a swim event known as the John Locco winter classic at the Brighton yacht club.[6][7] Locco is the brother of Peter Locco, like him a retired school teacher. Locco gave a tribute to Terry Pritchard, also known as Terry Ten Times, who passed away in 2019. Locco's brother Frank died in 2016 and four years later Debbie Locco, the wife of Frank, died. Locco once appeared on the Tony Bolton show. [8] [9]
Locco met the boxer George Foreman and Ali as well. Locco really enjoys boxing.
Locco dislikes Max Kellerman’s style as an interviewer and Locco interviewed Manny Pacquiao, the boxer. [10]
Locco retired from Moorabbin Technical College in 1988 and on his way out denounced the Principal Mrs Margaret Mitchell.
John Locco is often seen in photos with multiple celebrities ranging from Cathy Freeman to Rex Hunt.
Locco attended a function hosted by TEAL Candidate for Brighton
Felicity Frederico.
