John Perry (Born: USA) is an American pianist and international professor of piano American pianist and teacher. He and his wife Mina Hirobe-Perry from Japan are co-founders of John Perry Academy in 2013. One of their famous students is Umi Garrett. Mr. Perry earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at the Eastman School of Music.[1] He continued his studies in Europe for four years at the Akademie für Musik in Vienna. Mrs. Perry earned her Bachelor and Master Degrees at Musashino Academia Musicae in Tokyo. After three years concerting and teaching in Japan, she worked and studied in Europe where she earned an Artist Diploma. She then continued advanced studies at Glen Gould School of Music in Canada. Besides her own academy with John, she is director of the Honors Piano Performance Seminar at the Colburn School of Performing Arts in Los Angeles and maintains a private studio in La Crescenta, California.

Concerts and Activities[edit]

John Perry has won numerous awards including the highest prizes in both the Busoni[2] and Viotti International Music Competition and special honors at the Marguerite Long-Thibaud-Crespin Competition in Paris. He loves camber music and working together with other instrumentalist. He works internationally and often is a jury member at competitions.

His Professorships[edit]

He is professor at the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto,[3] professor of piano at California State University Northridge in Los Angeles,[4] visiting artist at the faculty of Boston University,[5] and was Professor of the USC Thornton School of Music.[6]

During summer he is artist professor:

  • at the Lake Como International Piano Academy,[7] the Banff Center in Alberta,[8] Canada,
  • the Sarasota Music Festival in Florida,[9]
  • the Orford Music Festival in Quebec,[10]
  • the Morningside Music Bridge Program in Calgary, Alberta,[11]
  • the Internationaler Klaviersommer Cochem, Germany,[12]
  • the International Music Festival in Perugia, Italy,[13]
  • the Amalfi Coast Music Festival in Italy, Montecito[14]
  • and International Music Festival in Santa Barbara,.[15]

In winter, January, he is main guest artist at the Sydney Piano Festival in Australia.[16]

Recordings and YouTube Publications[edit]

His recordings are available on the Telefunken, Musical Heritage Society, CBC, ACA and Fox labels and YouTube (where he plays with his wife, or his wife plays and two of his students, giving an expample of how their teaching works. (most on their respective YT-page of Mina Perry or Andrea Perry, an other family member)
