John Riesen

John Riesen (born 1990) is an American tenor and graduate of Michigan State University. He is active in opera, concert and musical theatre. He has released two studio albums, "What You'd Call a Dream"[1] in 2019 and "Christmas at Home"[2][3][4][5][6] in 2020[7].

Career[edit]

Riesen began his musical training at Michigan State University as a member of the MSU Opera Program. He first performed as Romeo in Gounod's Romeo et Juliette in 2010.[8] He also performed Frederic in Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance,[9] Hoffmann in Offenbach's Les Contes D'Hoffmann, Rodolfo in Puccini's La Boheme, La Podesta in Mozart's La Finta Giardienera, Uncle John in Ricky Ian Gordon's The Grapes of Wrath, and Marco in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi.

In November 2013, Riesen performed in Michigan Opera Theatre's production of Verdi's La Traviata with performers such as Nicole Cabell, Stephen Powell, Leonardo Caimi and Corinne Winters[10], In July 2013, Riesen performed at Chautauqua Institution for Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg[11]and in 2014 he sang the American national anthem for President Barack Obama. He earned his Bachelor of Music degree in 2012 and Masters of Music degree in 2014 both from Michigan State University, where he was a student of Richard Fracker. As a graduate of MSU, he has also coached with Renee Fleming, Marlena Malas, Molly Fillmore, David Small, Craig Terry, Gayletha Nichols and Ricky Ian Gordon.

In 2015-16 Riesen performed Frederic in Pirates of Penzance, Don Remendado in Bizet's Carmen, Ralph Rackstraw in Gilbert and Sullivan's HMS Pinafore, Father Grenville in Jake Heggie's Dead Man Walking with Shreveport Opera[12] and Lensky in Chatuaqua Opera's production of Eugene Onegin.[13]

In 2016 Riesen debuted as Alfredo in Verdi's La Traviata with Tri-Cties Opera, performed the tenor soloist in Twisted 2 with Opera Columbus, The Columbus Symphony and Balletmet, and Rodolfo in Puccini's La Boheme with Shreveport Opera.

In 2017 Riesen performed as tenor soloist with the Texarkana Symphony,[14] tenor soloist with the Marshall Symphony, tenor soloist in Handel's Messiah with New Amsterdam Opera,[15] tenor soloist with the Jackson Symphony, Rinuccio in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi with Crested Butte Music Festival, and Frederic in Pirates of Penzance with Opera Ithaca.

In May 2018, Riesen performed as the voice of Tony in Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story Suite with the New York City Ballet under the baton of Andrew Litton. He also performed the tenor soloist in Igor Stravinsky's Les Noces, working with Kent Tritle and Andrew Litton. Riesen also performed as B.F. Pinkerton in Puccini's Madama Butterfly with Pensacola Opera[16], Gaston in Disney's Beauty and the Beast with Shreveport Opera, Tony in West Side Story with the Boulder Philharmonic,[17] Candide in Bernstein's Candide with Chautauqua Opera,[18] Younger Thompson in Tom Cipullo's Glory Denied with Des Moines Metro Opera,[19] Ralph Rackstraw in HMS Pinafore with Anchorage Opera[20] and Henrik in Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music with Opera Ithaca.[21]

In 2019 Riesen performed as Younger Thompson in Opera Birmingham's production of Glory Denied, Lensky in Tcaikovsky's Eugene Onegin with Intermountain Opera Bozeman, Alfredo in Verdi's La Traviata with Gulfshore Opera,[22] Prince Charming in Opera Company of Middlebury's production of Massenet's Cendrillion,[23] and Romeo in Gounod's Romeo et Juliette with the Brevard Music Festival. In November 2019, Riesen performed as Pirelli in Sondheim's Sweeney Todd next to Karen Ziemba, Stephen Powell, and Ron Raines with Rob Fisher conduction at the Michigan Opera Theatre and performed the tenor soloist in Rachmaninoff's Vespers with the Oratorio Society of New York[24] under the baton of Kent Tritle.

During the Covid-19 Pandemic, Riesen partnered with Emmy-nominated pianist and composer Marina Arsenijevic to perform livestream concerts on youtube achieving millions of streams with Classical-Crossover songs by Josh Groban, Michael Buble, Tom Jones and Frank Sinatra.[25] Riesen also released new music to Spotify including Classical-Crossover singles "You Came Into My Life"[26], O Danny Boy[27], and Bring Him Home from Les Miserables.[28] He has partnered with Australian composer Peter Cavallo and Modern Classical X to help promote Classical and Classical-Crossover Singing on streaming services.

In March 2021 Mr. Riesen performed Ralph Rackstraw in a covid-19 safe production of HMS Pinafore with Pensacola Opera and is preparing to perform Alfredo in Verdi's La Traviata with the Pacific Symphony. He will be making his Carnegie Hall debut as the tenor soloist in Handel's Messiah with Musica Sacra under the baton of Kent Tritle in Dec 2021 and performing as Frederic in Pirates of Penzance with Utah Opera.[29]
