John James Shedletsky III (born February 6, 1983), known also as EarlGrey,[1] is an American software engineer and former creative director for Roblox.[2] He is notable for developing several core features and games for the platform.

Education

John James Shedletsky III was born on February 6, 1983. He graduated from Brewster High School in Brewster, New York. He attended Stanford University, earning both a bachelor's and a master's degree in computer science in 2006, with additional studies in biology and classical literature.

Career

Shedletsky joined Roblox in 2006 as the fourth engineer, bringing a background in game design and computer graphics.[3] He served as Creative Director from 2006 until 2014, when he resigned.[4] During his time, he created an alternate Roblox account named 1x1x1x1 for testing purposes, where myths would later emerge that the account would supposedly trace your IP address.[5] He also invented the phrase "Blame John!", where if somethings happens, the user would blame it on John.[lower-alpha 1] The phrase became widely used in in-game protests.[6]

After leaving his full-time position in 2014, Shedletsky continued to collaborate with Roblox on an as-needed basis, serving as a product consultant since 2015 and designing many of the platform's official toys. He has also co-founded other businesses including Instrumental and Bizsift.

Controversy

Shedletsky has been involved in several controversies regarding comments he has made on social media. In September 2024, he received criticism for defending the use of artificial intelligence in art and for comments he made on animal welfare. In early 2025, he received criticism for defending Elon Musk's hiring of young engineers for a temporary government efficiency project.
