John Tatchell Freeman (1958–2022) was an artist and writer known for his printmaking, cartoons and paintings.[1]

Education[edit]

He was awarded a scholarship to study in Paris at age 16 and then studied painting at Bath Academy of Art (Corsham) 1976–77 and then at Chelsea School of Art 1977–80.[2]

Life and work[edit]

Moving from London to rural Byworth, West Sussex for a period gave rise to an exhibition of paintings at the National Trust's nearby Petworth House[citation needed] and a later book about his time there. The Guardian's William Gibson saw the Brixton artist's[vague] Three Disorientated Months as "funny, dark and wonderfully observed",[3] with Fortean Times's David Sutton reviewing it as "a sort of painterly Withnail and I."[4]

He collaborated with Jah Wobble and Deep Space in 2001 at the Tate Britain, British Library and Royal Festival Hall, South Bank retrospective exhibition and concerts The Tygers of Wrath celebrating the life of William Blake,[5] contributing to lectures with his own insights into Blake's etching techniques and psychology, running printing workshops and producing the concert poster.

His paintings and etchings illustrate poetry in publications by Pauline Stainer and texts by Frances Spalding[6] and he has contributed to album covers for Jah Wobble[7] and Corin Redgrave.

Teaching and trusteeships[edit]

He taught and lectured at the Royal Drawing School,[8] Tate Gallery, Hurtwood House[9] and West Dean College.[10]

He was a former Trustee of Creative Response,[11] established in Surrey in 1993 to help persons with mental health and or substance misuse issues through the provision of activities run by professional practising artists who share their creative practice.[12][not in citation given]

Collections[edit]

His etchings are in the collections of the Ashmolean Museum[13] in Oxford, Royal Festival Hall, London and the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery[14] in Swansea.
