Jomboy Media is a digital media company that produces content focused on sports and pop-culture. Founded by Jimmy "Jomboy" O'Brien in 2017, the Bronx-based firm produces a popular YouTube channel and several popular podcasts including The Chris Rose Rotation.[1], Talkin' Baseball[2], and Talkin' Yanks[3]

History[edit]

Jomboy Media began in 2017 as a Twitter account and podcast when O'Brien, then living in the San Francisco Bay Area, found himself wanting to connect with other fans of the New York Yankees baseball team. He and his long-time friend Jake Storiale offered opinions about the state of the team. Shortly after launching, a company approached O'Brien with an advertising deal which was successful and lead to an initial seed investment. After rent, O'Brien lived on $300 a month.[3]

In 2019, O'Brien posted a video of ejected Yankees manager Aaron Boone defending his players where he coupled his lip-reading skills and a modified audio feed to capture Boone's rant. It logged millions of impressions and made for a rallying cry that season. Later in 2019, he followed a report by The Athletic that the Houston Astros baseball team would signal upcoming pitches to hitters by banging a trash can. O'Brien leveraged his video editing skills to create another major viral sensation. The company, funded by advertising sales, merchandise sales, and investment by filmmaker Eli Roth, Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ, entrepreneur Andrew J. Chapin, and retired MLB players Trevor Plouffe and Josh Satin, continued to grow, hiring more than ten employees and opening a studio near Yankee Stadium in The Bronx.[4][5] Plouffe also joined the company as an employee, hosting Sequence with Trevor Plouffe and co-hosting Talkin' Baseball with O'Brien and Storiale.[6]
