John Onjefu Ogah (born on August 23, 1991) popularly known by his stage name Jon Ogah is a singer and songwriter from Nigeria. He began his career in 2009 after winning the maiden edition of Naija Sings.[1] In 2015, he released an EP, “Uncle Suru: The Album”.[2][3] In February 2017, Jon joined the cast of Big Brother Naija as a 'fake' housemate.[4]
Early Background and Education[edit]
From Benue State, Jon is the third of six children. His father is a retired military general and his mother a civil servant. Due to his fathers job, the family moved a lot so Jon experienced different cultures and schooled in Lagos, Jos and Abuja.[5] He later attended the University of Portsmouth, UK, where he studied Business Administration. In 2015, Jon went to Grenoble Ecole de Management in France for his master's degree in International Business.[6]
He lists his early musical influences as including Michael Jackson, Backstreet Boys, Westlife, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Anita Baker.
Career[edit]
In 2009, Jon auditioned for the singing competition Naija Sings and emerged as the winner of the show in October that year[7]. He released his first single “Gbedu” featuring popular Nigerian rapper Sasha P and later attended the Channel O Music Awards in South Africa. Subsequent years saw Jon less active in the music industry because he was joggling both school and music.
In November 2014, he returned to music with another single called “Uncle Suru” [8] he returned to music with his pop single written for Suru, his senior and choirmaster in high school,[9] who inspired him to begin singing in church and later to take on music as a career. He died in 2014 after a Boko Haram car bomb was set off in a Kaduna church, where he was an usher. According to him, “Uncle Suru is a letter to him, letting him know that I am chasing my dreams and even though its hard I wont give up.” A remix of the song with guest appearances by Adekunle Gold and Simi, was released in 2017.[10]
After his master's degree, he returned to Nigeria and joined the cast of Big Brother Naija as a 'fake' housemate. Currently he is working on his debut album which would be released in 2018.
