Jonathan Cloud (born January 11, 1993) is an American hip hop musician, rapper, and record producer from Boston, Massachusetts. His work blends boom-bap, trap, R&B, and blaxploitation elements with samples from video games, J-pop, and global sources. In a Bandcamp Daily artist feature, Cloud discussed his aesthetic, influences, and philosophy of independence.[1] He releases music primarily via his independent label First Life on Bandcamp and is distributed through Roc Nation Distribution.
Early life
Cloud was born in Massachusetts and grew up in the Boston area. He first became interested in beatmaking after hearing a tribute to J Dilla’s Donuts, which motivated him to experiment with sampling.[1] He cites influences including 9th Wonder, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, RZA, and Alchemist.[1] His appreciation for Japanese culture (anime, manga, and the video game Jet Set Radio) is a recurring theme in his visual and sonic style.[1]
Career
Cloud began releasing projects in the mid-2010s, starting with instrumental tapes like Gallery of Oddities (2014).[2] Over time, he has worked with various artists and expanded into vocal work.
In 2025, he released the single "Fear" (feat. Jadakiss).[3][4] He has also released "Apocalypse Now" (feat. Kurupt).[5]
His stylistic progression includes beat tapes like Final (2018), and full-length projects such as Daedalus (2020) and Serapeum (The Daughter Library) (2020). In later years, he put out V (2022), Still Eaten Alive (2024), and the collaborative EP Channel 3 with Jake One (2024). As of late 2025, he announced an upcoming instrumental album titled Candyman.
In the Bandcamp interview, Cloud emphasizes his desire to remain underground and creative, managing his output and identity without major-label constraints.[1]
