Jonila Godole (born 1974) is a researcher in communication sciences, lecturer at the Department of Journalism and Communication, University of Tirana, since 2005, writer, translator of German literature. Since 2014, she is the founder and executive director of the Institute for Democracy, Media and Culture [1] (IDMC).

Education[edit]

Jonila Godole studied language and literature at the Faculty of History and Philology in Tirana (1993-1997) and later in political science, sociology and pedagogy at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, Germany (1999–2005).

Her areas of scientific research include political communication, media systems, and the role of media in collective memory. She has been a doctor of science since 2013, with a paper on Albanian journalism in transition and its issues, published in 2014 (Papyrus). Dr. Godole is the author of dozens of scientific articles published at home and abroad dedicated to the development of media and journalism in post-communist countries.

Professional activity[edit]

Jonila Godole was one of the first independent press journalists in Albania after the fall of the communist regime, well known especially for interviews with the most important political actors of the time.[2] Godole has worked as a journalist and editor for the newspapers "Populli Po" (1993–1994), "Koha Jonë" (1994–1997), "ABC" (2005–2006), as well as as a correspondent from Germany for several Albanian newspapers (1997 -2005).

After graduating from Frankfurt and returning to Tirana in 2005, she started as an internal lecturer at the Department of Journalism and Communication at the University of Tirana, where she is the head of the courses "Media Genres", "Introduction to Political Communication", " Media product analysis", "Media, society and economy" and "Editorial structure and management".

From 2012 until today, Godole is the coordinator for Albania of two international scientific projects: Worlds of Journalism Studies [3] , under the direction of by Prof. Thomas Hanitzsch, LMU Munich, and Journalism Students Across the Globe , under the direction of Folker Hanusch (Austria) and Claudia Mellado (Chile).

Since 2014, Godole is the founder and executive director of IDMC [4], a partner institution of the Konrad-Adenauer Foundation in Tirana, with a focus on engaging young people in public policy and promoting their reflection through awareness-raising activities on the communist regime and its consequences.

From March 2018, [5] Godole has been elected Vice President of the Board of the Institute of Studies on the Crimes and Consequences of Communism (ISKPK).

In August 2021, she was appointed to the presidency of the Democratic Party of Albania as Secretary for the issues of the Politically Persecuted. [6]

Literary and artistic activity[edit]

Jonila Godole is known as a writer, translator and cultural activist. She has published the novel "The Kiss of the Leader" (Aleph: 2002), dozens of stories in anthologies and literary magazines, as well as the drama "The Man of the Sand". Jonila Godole: Drama in Albania, a manly craft. The drama has had stage readings at the Burgtheater Vienna [7] [8] (28.5.2010), Volkstheater Vienna [9] (1.3. 2014) and Nürnberg (28.6.2015).

Godole is a translator of German literature, where the authors can be distinguished: Rainer M. Rilke (Duineser Elegien), Adelbert von Chamisso (Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte), Heinrich von Kleist (Die Marquise von O ...), Robert Musil (Törleß), Thomas Bernhard (Die Macht der Gewohnheit; Der Italiener), Friedrich Dürrenmatt (Der Prozess um Esels Schatten), Julia Franck (Die Mittagsfrau), Arthur Schnitzler (Reigen), Werner Schwab (Die Präsidentinnen), Franz Lehar (Die lustige Witwe as well as stories by W. Köppen, M. Haushofer, or poems by contemporary authors Daniela Danz and Andrea Grill.

Godole has been working for years on the translation of the monumental work of the Austrian author Robert Musil, "Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften" [10] (" A man without quality ").

Since 2013 she has been the director of the International Literature Festival [11] (TILF), which takes place every two years in Tirana with local writers and foreigners, with the support of the German Allianz Kulturstiftung and the Ministry of Culture. Part of this literary project is also the annual awareness activity '#TiranaLexon'.

Godole served as a board member of the National Theater in 2014–2018.[12]

Awards[edit]

For the drama "The Man of the Sand", Jonila Godole in 2010 won the drama competition organized by the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

For her work as a translator she was awarded two important prizes: "Cult Award 2011" [13] for " Duine Elegies "by RM Rilke and the Translation Award of the Ministry of Education, Art and Culture in Austria (2013) for" The Terles Boy "by Robert Musil.

On December 16, 2019, Godoles was awarded the "High Decoration of Honor" by the President of Austria, Alexander Van der Bellen, with the motivation "as a lecturer and civil society activist, but also as a translator and writer, bringing Albanian works of many Austrian authors, such as Robert Musil, Rainer Maria Rilke, Thomas Bernhard, Arthur Schnitzler, Marlene Haushofer, Werner Schwab and others. 'The Man of Sand') was awarded the first prize by the Austrian Foreign Ministry and the PEN Club in 2010, and was placed, among other things, in the prestigious Burgtheater and Volkstheater stages in Vienna.[14]

On February 23, 2022, the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, awarded Godola the " Federal Cross of Merit ". As a motivation, the German ambassador Peter Zingraff mentioned: "The axis that runs through her literary, journalistic and honorary commitment is the treatment of the communist dictatorship of Hoxha. She gives a platform to the victims of political violence and works for their rehabilitation, their dignified assessment by society and the preservation of testimonies from witnesses of the time for future generations. She makes sure that new generations in schools and universities deal with the subject of communist tyranny. Her commitment to an honest treatment of the past sets standards in terms of perseverance , duration and intensity.” [15]
