José Manuel Ciria (born 3 February 1960 in Manchester) is a Spanish painter.[1] He is known for making abstract paintings. His paintings often mix free brushstrokes with geometric shapes.
His work can be found in important museums around the world, such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Albertina in Vienna, and the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.[2]
Life
Ciria was born in Manchester, England, to Spanish parents. When he was eight years old, his family moved back to Madrid, Spain.[3]
Career
Ciria had his first solo art show in 1984 in Paris, France. At first, he painted in a more realistic style. In the early 1990s, he changed to painting in an abstract style. His paintings from this time explore the balance between random shapes and controlled geometric forms.[4]
In the 1990s, the Spanish government gave him two important grants. One was to live and work in Paris in 1994, and another was to live and work in Rome in 1995.[5]
Living in New York
In 2005, Ciria moved to New York City. He lived and worked there until 2012. The paintings he made during this time are called The New York Paintings. In 2013, a film about his life and work called Ciria, Pronounced Thiria was shown at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.[6]
Later work
After New York, Ciria continued to show his work in museums and galleries around the world.[7] In 2024, he published a book about his work called Sueños abstractos[8] and opened a new exhibition called Fuego y Silencio in Madrid.[9]
