Joseph Diangienda Kuntima (23 March 1918 – 8 July 1992) was, from December 24, 1959 until his death, the spiritual leader of the Kimbanguist Church (officially "Church of Jesus Christ on Earth by his special envoy Simon Kimbangu"). Until today, he is considered one of the greatest Congolese religious personalities. He was, He is the initiator of the Kimbanguist movement and was the first to relate the history of this religion and he set up the self-financing and self-management of this Church which is today one of the most represented religions on the African continent.

Third and last son of Simon Kimbangu and Marie Muilu Kiawanga, he has two brothers: Charles Daniel Kisolokele Lukelo and Salomon Dialungana Kiangani. As their father was in prison, the family lived in difficult conditions; they grew up, however, communicating frequently with their father, whose precepts and advice they followed until his death.

Biography

Early life

Joseph Diangienda Kuntima, born March 22, 1918 in Nkamba in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Belgian Congo), is the youngest of the three children of Simon Kimbangu and Marie Muilu Kiawanga. The family lives in a small fired brick house with a straw roof, in the village of Nkamba (Bas-Congo), south-west of Léopoldville (now Kinshasa). The father, converted by the Baptist Missionary Society, worked for several years as a catechist. The mother stays at home to care for the children; while raising them, she cultivates the fields. Joseph Diangienda died on in Geneva (Switzerland) at La Tour hospital.
