Joseph Kishore (born 1980) is an American socialist politician and writer associated with the Marxist and Trotskyist tradition. He is the National Secretary of the Socialist Equality Party (SEP).[1]
Career
Kishore became active in the socialist movement in 1999 while attending Rutgers University in New Jersey.[2] He joined the International Youth and Students for Social Equality (then called Students for Social Equality),[3] and then later joined the Socialist Equality Party.
Kishore was elected national secretary of the Socialist Equality Party at its founding congress in August 2008.[4] In 2020, Kishore was the presidential nominee of the SEP in the 2020 United States presidential election with running mate Norissa Santa Cruz.[5] In 2024, Kishore was nominated once again for the SEP candidate in the United States presidential election, with Jerry White as the vice presidential candidate.[6]
Political views
Kishore advocates replacing capitalism with an international socialist society. In a 2011 interview with LA Weekly, he argued that socialism requires democratic control of production and the economy in the interests of social need rather than private profit, and rejected the idea that capitalism could be adequately addressed through limited social reforms.[7]
During his 2020 presidential campaign, Kishore stated that the working class should take political power, redistribute wealth concentrated among the wealthy, and place major banks and corporations under democratic control.[8]
Kishore has also argued that the major social and political problems facing workers are international in character and therefore require an international socialist response. His 2024 campaign presented opposition to war, economic inequality, authoritarianism and environmental degradation as interconnected consequences of capitalism.[9]
On domestic economic policy, Kishore has criticized both the Democratic and Republican parties as representing corporate and financial interests. He has called for expanding public health care, education and social programs and for reorganizing economic life around social need rather than private profit.[10]
Kishore has also opposed U.S. military interventions and argued that war abroad is connected to economic inequality and attacks on workers at home. In his 2024 campaign, he linked opposition to the wars in Gaza and Ukraine to a broader critique of U.S. militarism and capitalism.[11]
