Joseph South
Joseph South is the chief learning officer at the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). Prior to this position, he was the director of the Office of Educational Technology at the U.S. Department of Education. South focuses on transforming learning into "fun and interactive" experiences using evidence-based practices.[1][2]
Biography[edit]
South received a bachelor's degree in English (2000) and a master's and doctorate in instructional psychology and technology (2008) from Brigham Young University. He is married to Diana Turnbow. They have two sons.[2]

Early career[edit]
Following graduation, South was hired by Brigham Young University to develop an adaptive language learning system that is still used at the LDS Missionary Training Center. He has also worked for online learning provider K12 Inc., Middlebury Interactive Languages, the Shodor Education Foundation, the Highlander Institute, and IDEO.[2][3]
U.S. Department of Education Office of Educational Technology[edit]
From 2016 to 2017 South was the director of the Office of Educational Technology.[4] During his tenure, the office focused on implementing openly licensed educational resources (OERs) and promoting digital content through the Future Ready Schools initiative, the ConnectED campaign, and the #GoOpen campaign.[3]
International Society for Technology in Education[edit]
In 2017 South became the chief learning officer at ISTE. He is helping the company expand its reach to higher education by encouraging teacher preparation programs to help future teachers use technology more effectively in the classroom. He is also encouraging coalition building and relationship building between educators for information sharing.[5][6]
