Joshua James Stephenson (born 15 February 2006) is an English professional footballer who plays as a central defender for League Two club Crewe Alexandra, on loan from Championship club Brentford.
Stephenson is a product of the Millwall academy and began his professional career with Brentford in 2024.
Career
Millwall
A left-sided central defender or full back,[3] Stephenson began his youth career with in the Chelsea Academy.[4] A broken leg and a seven-month recovery period led to his release.[4] From FC Tempo he then moved into the Millwall academy.[5] He progressed to sign a scholarship deal and became captain of the U18 team,[5][6] which won the 2023–24 U18 Professional Development League Cup.[7] Stephenson was voted the club's Academy Player of the Year for the 2023–24 season.[8] After the season, he elected to turn down the offer of a professional contract and departed the Den.[9]
Brentford
In July 2024, Stephenson agreed to transfer to the B team at Premier League club Brentford, but the move was delayed by a back injury.[7] On 26 November 2024, Stephenson signed a four-year contract, with the option of a further year,[6] for a fee later decided by tribunal.[9] He made 31 appearances during the remainder of the 2024–25 season and was part of the Professional U21 Development League-winning squad.[10][11] He also spent time training with the first team squad and was named as B team captain ahead of the 2025–26 season.[10][12]
After making two first team appearances during the 2025–26 pre-season,[13][14] Stephenson was an unused substitute in five matches during the regular season.[2] After Benjamin Arthur's departure on loan in January 2026, Stephenson joined first team training full time.[2] During the 2025–26 B team season, Stephenson made 30 appearances, scored six goals and was part of the squad which finished as regular season champions of the Professional U21 Development League.[3] He was voted the club's U21 Player of the Year.[15]
Stephenson made a first team friendly appearance during the 2026–27 pre-season and was promoted into the first team squad on a full-time basis.[16][17] On 21 August 2026, he joined League Two club Crewe Alexandra on a half-season loan.[17]
