Josuke Higashikata (東方 仗助, Higashikata Jōsuke) is a fictional character in the Japanese manga series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, written and illustrated by Hirohiko Araki. The main protagonist of the series' fourth story arc, Diamond is Unbreakable, he is the illegitimate son of Joseph Joestar, who vows to protect his hometown of Morioh from Stand Users who would threaten it after witnessing the death of his grandfather. Josuke wields the Stand Crazy Diamond (クレイジー・ダイヤモンド, Kureijī Daiyamondo)[lower-alpha 1], which has the ability to repair objects and heal people.

Araki has stated that because of the setting of the neighborhood setting of Diamond is Unbreakable, he considered Josuke as someone he could look up to and trust. He was voiced by Wataru Hatano in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven and by Yūki Ono and Billy Kametz in the anime adaptation in Japanese and English, respectively, with the former being his current Japanese voice actor since. He was also portrayed by Kento Yamazaki in the live-action film adaptation. Reception of Josuke has been positive, with many critics calling him one of the kinder protagonists in the series.

Creation and Development[edit]

With Diamond is Unbreakable's setting being in a small town, Araki wanted to create a character that the audience would be able to look up to as a friend or senior, in contrast to Jotaro Kujo, who would be looked up to as a hero. Josuke, like many of the characters from Diamond is Unbreakable, was designed with his own aesthetic. Josuke's name uses kanji that can be read back as "JoJo".[1]

While designing the characters for Diamond is Unbreakable, Araki took heavy inspiration from Italian fashion magazines, moving away from the muscular looks seen from Phantom Blood to Stardust Crusaders. Araki wanted Josuke to be a character that could be right next to the reader, experiencing everyday life just like them.[2]

Casting[edit]

In JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven, Josuke was voiced by Wataru Hatano. From the release of the anime adaptation onward, he was voiced by Yūki Ono.[3] Ono described Josuke as someone he "enjoyed being with in various ways."[4] Billy Kametz voiced Josuke in the English dub of the anime. Kametz saved voicing Josuke's Stand Crazy Diamond last for every recording session, primarily due to him having to yell really loudly.[5]

Josuke was portrayed by Kento Yamazaki in the film JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable Chapter I.[6]

Appearances[edit]

Stardust Crusaders[edit]

While he is not shown or mentioned during the events of Stardust Crusaders, Josuke was affected by the distress signal sent by Jonathan Joestar's body, suffering from a high fever. After being trapped in snow, an unknown high-schooler with a pompadour throws his jacket under his mother's car, allowing them to safely move through. Despite never meeting again, that high-schooler becomes Josuke's role model, wanting to be just like him and modeling his hairstyle after his.[7]

Diamond is Unbreakable[edit]

Josuke and his friend Koichi Hirose meet Jotaro Kujo, who is looking for him due to the fact that he is the illegitimate son of Joseph Joestar.[8] After a confrontation about his pompadour, Jotaro explains to Josuke that a death row inmate named Anjuro "Aneglo" Katagiri is hiding in his town of Morioh. After making an enemy out of him, Anjuro uses his Stand to murder Josuke's grandfather.[9] Josuke then turns Anjuro into a rock, and vows to protect Morioh in his grandfather's honor.

Reception and Legacy[edit]

Josuke is Araki's favorite character in the series.[1][lower-alpha 2] During the 2019 ISU World Figure Skating Championships, skater Keiji Tanaka cosplayed as the character during an exhibition gala, performing to the character's theme from Diamond Is Unbreakable.[10]

Josuke appears as one of the protagonists in the spin-off manga Crazy Diamond's Demonic Heartbreak.[11] An alternate version of Josuke appears as the main protagonist of the series eighth story arc JoJolion.[lower-alpha 3]
