The Journal for Religion, Film and Media (JRFM) is an academic journal that appears twice a year. It focuses on the analysis of the complex interactions between religion and audio-visual media.[1] JRFM’s profile is interdisciplinary and its articles represent a variety of different methodological and theoretical approaches.[2] The journal is published in English and appears online as open access; it is also available as Print on Demand through Schüren Verlag Marburg (Germany). Calls for Papers are regularly published on the journal homepage and its Facebook page. The Journal is listed on several international indexes.[3]

History[edit]
Christian Wessely (Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz, Austria) and Daria Pezzoli-Olgiati (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich, Germany) developed the concept of an open access journal in the field of media and religion in 2013. The editorial board includes members from various countries with different academic background.
The first issue of JRFM was published on November 15, 2015.[4] Since then, the journal appears twice a year, on May 15 and November 15.
The journal is supported by Graz University, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich, Villanova University, and the Austrian state of Styria. The online edition is hosted by the University Library Graz. Schüren Verlag (Marburg, Germany) provides support and publishes the Print on Demand version of the journal.
Published Issues So Far[edit]
- Materiality of Writing. Reconsidering Religious Texts: How does the materiality of a text influence meaning-making processes? How does its materiality impact the multi-layered communication processes in which a text is involved during its long-term transmission?
- Religion and Popular Music: God gave Rock n' Roll to us and many other music genres. This issue approaches the interactions between relgiion and popular music from Nick Cave to Lady Gaga, from Flamenco to Black Metal.
- Science Fiction and Religion: Exploring new worlds, creating something new, challenging the old... This issue analyzes the various interactions between religion and science fiction.
- Apocalyptic Imaginings: The articles in the thematic section of this issue investigate media representations of the apocalypse.
- Understanding Jesus in the Early Modern Period and Beyond: Across Text and Other Media: The life of Jesus has fascinated people across cultures and religious traditions and inspired a vast variety of media representations, some of which are analyzed in this issue.
- Special Edition: Selected Papers of JRFM: This special issue offers a selection of articles from JRFM issues published between 2015 and 2019 that investigate the relationship between religion, film and media, and represents the journal as a scholarly project.
- "Who, Being Loved, Is Poor?" Material and Media Dimensions of Weddings: The issue focuses on the topic of the mediality of weddings and analyzes the representation of the ritual of marriage in various media.
- Trauma, Memory and Religion: The articles in this issue focus on the interaction between traumata, memory and religion as expressed in media across cultures.
- Using Media in Religious Studies: How can media be used constructively in teaching religious studies? This question and others are the focus of this issue.
- Drawn Stories, Moving Images. Comic Books and their Screen Adaptations: Good and evil, heroes and martyrs, apocalyptic scenarious are the building blocks of comic narratives and their filmic adaptations. The issue analyzes religious motifs, narratives and fundamental questions expressed in this medium.
- From Social Criticism to Hope. The Cinema of the Dardenne Brothers: Realistic, critical and yet full of hope. The films of the Dardenne Brothers are a rich resource for scholars who are interested in the interaction between religion and media, as this issue shows.
- "I Sing the body electric". Body, Voice, Technology and Religion: Body and voice are media of communication, including religious communication. What role does technology play in this? This is one of the questions discussed in this issue.
- Thinking Methods in Media and Religion: The first issue of JRFM offers a reflection on methodological and interdisciplinary approaches to the field of media and religion and traces the multiple interactions between the two areas.
