Jovan Blacknell is an American criminal defense attorney and civil litigation attorney. Blacknell has handled several high-profile cases. In 2017, Blacknell was named to the National Bar Association's list of “40 Under 40 Nation’s Best Advocates”.[1]

Early life and education[edit]

Blacknell attended Merrillville High School in Merrillville, Indiana. While in high school, he played on the basketball team.[2] After high school, Blacknell attended Southern Illinois University and then earned his law degree from Valparaiso University School of Law.

Career[edit]

Before entering private practice, Blacknell worked as a deputy public defender for the Los Angeles County Public Defender's office. Blacknell worked at the Compton, California courthouse.[3] Blacknell has also provided legal commentary. After the acquittal of George Zimmerman for the Shooting of Trayvon Martin, Blacknell said: "I do think the case was winnable by the prosecution. The first thing I would try to do, you want to select a jury that identifies with your point of view, that relates to the issue that you’re trying to put forward. In the Zimmerman case, you have an all-female jury and mostly white — that jury was able to relate to the story the defender was saying."[3]

Criminal defense[edit]

In 2015, Blacknell represented Ezeoma Obioha who was charged with the capital murder of Carrie Melvin.[4][5] In 2017, Blacknell was retained to represent Cameron Terrell who was charged in a South Los Angeles gang-related killing.[6] In 2018, Terrell was acquitted of murder and attempted murder. After the verdict Blacknell said, the evidence showed that Terrell “did not possess any weapons, he did not shoot anybody, he was not part of any conspiracy or any plan or plot to commit any crimes.”[7]

Civil litigation[edit]

In 2014, Blacknell was retained by the family of Dontre Hamilton after he was shot and killed by an officer from the Milwaukee Police Department.[8][9] In 2017, the Hamilton family received a 2.3 million dollar settlement from the City of Milwaukee.[10] In 2016, Blacknell represented Ken Sheppard in his lawsuit against the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.[11]

Personal life[edit]

Blacknell is married to Tiffiny Townend Blacknell who works a deputy public defender in the Los Angeles County Public Defender's office.[12] Both Blacknell and Townend Blacknell have engaged in activism in the Los Angeles community.[13][14]
