Jugonshi

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Jugonshi (呪禁師) were a kind of Onmyōdō practitioner influenced by Taoism. They performed treatments using spells. These spells were to expel evil spirits that caused illnesses. At first, people confused Jugonshi practices with Buddhist prayers. This is mentioned in the "Nihon Shoki" during Emperor Bidatsu's 6th year. The first formal record of Jugonshi is also in the "Nihon Shoki". It's from the 5th year of Empress Jito's reign, which is 691 AD.

In the Ritsuryo system, Jugon [ja] (呪禁) was important. It was used for treating diseases and ensuring safe childbirth. Skilled Jugonshi could become Jugon Hakase [ja] (呪禁博士). There was only one Jugon Hakase [ja] position. They trained Jugonsei (呪禁生), who had six positions. But Jugon became seen as dangerous. This was due to many Kodoku incidents. Kodoku involved malevolent charms and poisons. At the same time, Onmyodo was rising. Onmyodo also used Taoist magic. By the late 8th century, Jugonshi started to fade away. By the 9th century, the Jugonshi system had completely disappeared.

Jugon was gradually replaced with other forms of Onmyodo ja:呪禁師
