Julia Libani, professionally known as Julietta, is a singer-songwriter from New York City, who gained notice for the varied use of her music in major national promotions for such brands as Starbucks, Tom Ford and Canada's Rudsak[2] and on TV shows like Arrow, Broad City, Dirty John and Little Voice.[3] She has accumulated over 6 million streams on Spotify as of May 2021, along with being featured on Spotify's Viral 50 and Indie Pop playlists.[4] She broke on the indie pop scene in 2015 with her first EP, Conquest, recorded shortly after she graduated from Emerson College in 2013,[5] followed by a studio album in 2018 (Smooth Sailing) and a second EP in 2020 (Levitate). Her lyrics have been described as mature yet infectious, with psychedelic undertones and a relaxed mix of looped measures and a steady electronic beat.[3]

Early life[edit]

Julietta grew up in the Upper East Side of Manhattan during the 1990s and 2000s, and had a turbulent youth, fueled by drugs and alcohol, plus a stint in rehab. In 2018, she told LADYGUNN magazine: "I never liked to play by the rules, especially as a teenager...I used my hustle skills to make sure I had the right drugs, alcohol and popularity with a side of promiscuity to numb myself."[2] Writing music was her salvation; in high school she pursued musical theater, and in college (at Emerson College for Marketing and Communications[6]) she recorded several covers and wrote some original material.[7]

Career[edit]

Her first release from a label was an EP called Conquest, in 2015. She co-wrote most of the five original songs on the EP with the band Stray Echo.[8] The disc also includes two remixes of the title track, and those cuts established a trend of major DJs like Sofi Tukker and Yeasayer remixing Julietta's songs.[7] Online magazine ColoRising said: "...the record was a high-quality presentation of pop music without the fluff...an honest approach to songwriting and talented vocal work that remained consistent from the beginning song to the last."[5]

In 2018, Julietta released her first full-length album, entitled Smooth Sailing. The lead track, "Beach Break", released as a single in 2017, became her break-out song.[9] She wrote and recorded the song while on vacation in Nicaragua, where she says "I got completely lost in the jungle, lost in the ocean, and lost in my melodies while I was there".[5] The remaining tracks on the album look back at her teenage years, the highs and lows, and her struggles with depression.[2]

Her next effort was another EP, called Levitate, released in June of 2020, several months into the COVID-19 pandemic. It marked a major change in Julietta's life, as she relocated from New York to Los Angeles before starting the album, a move she felt was necessary for her mental health: "I wrote it...when I moved to Los Angeles and began to shed the layers I had been carrying for my whole life. I left everything and everyone I knew behind in New York to start over." Earmilk magazine wrote: "[Julietta's] new EP Levitate is filled with sultry, addictive songs that bring you into her world and make you never want to leave."[10]

Influences[edit]

Her influences range from Fleetwood Mac to Billie Eilish and Maggie Rogers; from Avril Lavigne to John Lennon. She grew up on the same street where Lennon lived and was shot (W 72nd St in Manhattan), and she gained an early appreciation of Lennon from the music played at the nearby Strawberry Fields (memorial) in Central Park.[3]
