Balakan Juma Mosque ( Azerbaijani: Balakən Cümə məscidi ) is a Friday mosque in the city of Balakan in Azerbaijan.[1] By order of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated August 2, 2001, the Juma Mosque was taken under state protection as an architectural monument of history and culture of national importance.
History[edit]
Juma Mosque in Balakan is one of the interesting monuments due to its artistic design, architectural solution and size. This minaret mosque in the center of the city is considered one of the rare examples of Islamic architecture not only in the region, but in all of Azerbaijan. Juma Mosque was built in Balakan. It was built in 1292 according to the Hijri-lunar calendar (XIX century).[2]
Arabic inscriptions are placed in four places on the north-western facade of the monument. In the inscriptions, the date of construction of the mosque, whose initiative it was built, the name of the craftsman who built the building, who gave the land needed for the construction of the mosque and other interesting information are reflected in the inscriptions. According to the notes in the first inscription, the construction of the place of worship began in 1867 and was completed in 1877. The second inscription on the river stone on the right side of the entrance reads: "All the people of Balakan who lived in the 13th century of the Hijri history, even the high-ranking and position-holding people, agreed that, taking into account everyone's wishes and desires, a beautiful and eye-catching, let them build an eye-catching mosque". The following words are written on the left square inscription:
"With the help of the Great God, the desire of the community was fulfilled, this house was illuminated by the light of the Prophet (pbuh) and attracted all Muslims to it.
Qazi Muhammad Dabir and master Omar Ilisulu called on everyone to make efforts in this work to see the further repairs of the mosque for the sake of God."
On the edges of the frame, there is a note:
"May God forgive the sinner, the land needed for the mosque and its cells, as well as other buildings, was donated by Laki bin Hallaj Muhammad."
The verse written in small letters on the top of that inscription indicates that the calligrapher of the inscriptions was Naqwas Al-Karati.
The mosque, which was used as a warehouse from the first years of Soviet rule until 1947, has been operating according to its purpose since that date. The mosque was renovated in 1955, 1980 and 1996. The last repair and restoration works in the monument were carried out by the state in 2006. Repair works were carried out at the personal expense of Ilham Karimov, who lives in Baku.
Architecture[edit]
The yard area is 3000 square meters, and the interior area is 40x23 meters. The mosque building was built with limestone, and the minaret with baked bricks. Its minaret is octagonal and decorated with floral ornaments. Its height is 44 meters. The courtyard of the mosque is surrounded by greenery and fenced with baked bricks. The height of the mosque from floor to ceiling is 8 meters. A balcony is located in front of the entrance doors. The porch (area 40x3 meters) consists of six columns and seven arches.[3] The prayer hall of the mosque has 12 columns and 26 arches. The pillars are made of baked bricks. The mosque has three entrance doors. There are 16 windows in the prayer hall. Inscriptions are engraved on the entrance doors of the mosque. The pulpit of Juma Mosque in Balakan city is made of wood and is exquisitely made. The design of the altar is also at a high level.
On the facade of the mosque there are several books, one of which says that the mosque was built from 1867 to 1877. Others mention the names of people who contributed to the construction of the mosque. The building of the mosque has a rectangular shape. The total area of the mosque is 1025 m. The 45-meter minaret is located separately from the mosque itself. This mosque is one of the rare examples not only of the Islamic architecture of this region, but of the whole of Azerbaijan.[4]
