Activity[edit]
She was born in 1950 in London to a deaf family. She has an older brother and a younger sister.
June left school at 14, and initially she followed her mother’s steps as a factory worker. She worked as a punch operator, and then as a printer for 15 years for Peter Jones, part of the John Lewis group.[1]
She met her lifelong partner, Frances Elton, in London. In 1978, together with a few other Deaf LGBT+ people, she set up the Brothers and Sisters Club, a Deaf LGBT club, which she helped running for 25 years.[2][3]
In 1986 she was approached to attend a course at Durham University, where she attained a teaching qualification in Sign Language. Since, she dedicated herself to teaching British Sign Language, working for several schools until retirement.
As well as a BSL trainer, Smith is a refined storyteller. In particular, her story “The tree” has been referenced by linguistics texts.[4][5][6]
