Justin Chapple
Justin Chapple ( born September 8, 1983), is an American chef, recipe developer, food writer, cookbook author, and video host, best known as the culinary director-at-large of Food & Wine[1][2] and host of their video series, Mad Genius Tips, in which he demonstrates recipes and pro cooking tips.[3][4]
Early life and education[edit]
Chapple was born in Stockton, California in San Joaquin Valley. He attended John Muir Elementary School and graduated from Lincoln High School in 2001. In 2003, he moved to New York City where he later studied and graduated from the French Culinary Institute,[1] which became the International Culinary Center. After graduation, he worked under chef Alain Allegretti at his namesake restaurant in New York City.[5][6]
Career[edit]
Chapple joined Food & Wine in early 2010, starting as an intern working on the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen.[7] He joined the Food & Wine test kitchen later that year, starting as a recipe tester and working his way up to being a deputy editor and eventually the culinary director at large.[8]
In 2013, Mad Genius Tips debuted, in which Chapple demonstrates recipes as well as oddball cooking techniques such as peeling hard-boiled eggs with a spoon and trussing chicken without kitchen string.[9] The series debuted on Food & Wine social media accounts.[10] The series was nominated for a James Beard Foundation Award in both 2016 and 2019.[11][12]
In 2018, a live version of Mad Genius debuted on Facebook Watch.[13] Guest chefs would join Chapple in the Food & Wine test kitchen to demonstrate their own recipes and cooking tips.[14] Chapple’s debut cookbook, Mad Genius Tips: Over 90 Expert Hacks and 100 Delicious Recipes, was published in 2016.[15] Chapple’s second cookbook, Just Cook It: 145 Built-to-be-Easy Recipes That Are Totally Delicious, was published in May of 2018.[16]
Chapple has been featured in Food & Wine, People, O The Oprah Magazine, and Real Simple magazines, among other publications.[2][17][18] He appears regularly on NBC’s Today[19][20] and has appeared on LIVE with Kelly and Ryan, Food Network’s The Kitchen, Hallmark’s Home & Family, Fox’s Good Day New York, and The Meredith Vieira Show, among others.[21][22][23][24]
Personal life[edit]
Chapple married his husband, Jason Sarnoff, on August 14, 2008 at San Francisco City Hall. They held a wedding ceremony in Queens, NY, which was featured in the March 2009 issue of New York magazine. Chapple and his husband live in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City.[25]
