Kalinga Commercial Corporation Limited (KCCL), commonly known as KCCL is a company with headquarters in Bhubaneswar. Kalinga Commercial Corporation Limited started as a proprietorship entity in 1991 in the transport and construction sector in Odisha, and in 2003-04 diversified into mechanized operation of mines.[2] Thereafter, it has grown considerably as a company with expertise in operating different mines for raising and transporting ores and minerals, including mechanized ore handling and conveying systems. During the period of boom in the iron and steel sector, the company was involved in mineral trading, export, logistical support, and infrastructure development in inaccessible mining areas. In 2009, it became a limited company as Kalinga Commercial Corporation Limited and also moved out of the state and started working in coal and chromite fields.[3] Today, KCCL has a full-fledged team for mechanized mining, starting from exploration, assessment of mineral deposits, mine planning to operation of a mining project. The company wants to avail the prevailing opportunity and scope in the mining sector, particularly in iron ore mining. Starting with production of less than 0.50 million tonnes in 2003-04, the company has achieved 8.5 million tonnes in 2017-18. Having expertise in open cast iron ore mechanized mining, processing, and ore handling systems, the company proposes 12.00 million tonnes in 2018-19 and 15.00 million tonnes in 2020-21. Now, contracts in hand are for more than Rs.3203.50 crores and with growth potential to achieve Rs.836.00 crores by 2020-21. This strength of the company gives confidence to achieve growth in the future with additional investments and taking up new projects.[4] [5]
Projects
Presently, KCC has four contracts of Odisha Mining Corporation with fully mechanized open cast operations by deployment of the manpower and machinery required for achieving production targets as per the contract, and these are:
Bot project at Daitari mines
This fully mechanized old mine of 2 MTPA capacity, commissioned in 1974, could not achieve more than 30% of its capacity as the crushing and ore handling plant (OHP) was the major bottleneck.[6] KCCL accepted the challenge for this bot contract of 10 years valued at Rs.1000 crores in 2010. During 2016-17, with production of 2.63 MTPA, it is now planned to achieve 3.0 MTPA. KCCL now proposes further expansion of the capacity subject to approval of Odisha Mining Corporation. [7] [8] [9]
Kurmitar iron ore mines Khandadhar
The present contract is for a period of 10 years from 2010-11 with enhancement of production capacity from 2.4 MTPA to 6.0 MTPA by the 5th year. Due to statutory constraints limiting the working area, the mine could not be operated smoothly up to October 2014, when even the capacity of 1.5 MTPA could not be achieved. The situation improved in 2015-16, and KCCL Odisha has already achieved 2.4 MTPA in 2016-17 and expects to achieve 4.0 MTPA in 2017-18. It is planned to achieve the original capacity of 6.0 MTPA during the remaining period of this contract.[10] Prior to this, KCCL Odisha had been operating this mine from 2005 to 2010, where starting from 0.5 MTPA, capacity was enhanced to 2.5 MTPA. This fully mechanized open cast mine was operated successfully starting from mine development, drilling and blasting, excavation, and transportation of ore and overburden.[11] This gives the strength to achieve higher targets subject to the availability of the required area of operation at the earliest.[12] [13]
Putulpani iron ore mines Gandhamardhan hills
This contract for 3 years for a production target of 1.00 MTPA is now in its 3rd year with successful operation in achieving the target by fully mechanized operation of the mine, with crushing, screening, and transportation of ore to different stockpiles. There is a likelihood of an extension of the contract for an additional 2 years, with a possible enhancement of the production target.
Gandhamardhan hills block - B iron ore mines
This is a new contract awarded in August 2017 for raising Iron Ore to produce 10-40mm CLO and 10mm fines, transportation of the above products to specified yards, disposal of subgrade and overburden including rejects to specified yards, and hilltop quarry of Gandhamardhan hills Block - B iron ore mine. This contract is initially for 5 years, which may be extended for 3 years, with a capacity of 2 million tonnes in the first year to be enhanced to 3 million from the 2nd year onwards. There is a possibility of enhancement of capacity subject to the availability of additional areas after statutory clearance. The company has already geared up for a production capacity of 3 million tonnes from the 2nd year onwards with required mining equipment, crushing and screening plants, and required auxiliary and support systems.
Other contracts
During August 2013 and May 2015, the company utilized its available HEMM equipment like drills, dozers, graders, shovels, and dumpers etc. for drilling, excavation, loading, transportation, and dumping etc. at Ukni open cast mines of the Wani North area of Western Coalfields (WCL) area. The company successfully completed the assignment, achieving more than the target with appreciation from the authority. Similarly, the company has engaged its mining equipment in various contracts for transportation of ore to stockpiles and loading into railway wagons. The company has gained credibility in the successful operation of the deepest open cast chromite mines at South Kaliapani Mines of Odisha Mining Corporation with continuous dewatering and management of mining operations. During the initial years while developing the mines, various civil structural works like roads and bridges, drains and bunds, residential colonies, offices, workshops, stores etc. have been executed to support the production efforts. Simultaneously, such activities have been taken up as desired by statutory provisions for environmental management and safety. The company has the expertise to get new assignments in mining iron ore, chromite, coal, bauxite etc. in India and abroad.
Performance of the company
The core business being Iron ore mining, its growth has been steady up to 2008-09. Iron ore mining suffered starting from 2010–11, which had much impact on the company's production of ore up to 2014-15. With the performance of 2017-18, it is likely to improve in the coming years.
Awards received
The multi-disciplinary team of the company has received awards for record productions from Odisha Mining Corporation, appreciation from Western Coalfields Limited, excellence awards for safe and eco-friendly working by statutory authorities of both state and central governments, and also recognition for welfare & CSR measures undertaken.
