KLM Flight 1204 was a scheduled passenger flight from Sandefjord, Vestfold, Norway to Haarlemmermeer, North Holland, Netherlands, on December 28, 2024. The aircraft skidded off to the right off the runway exit during the roll-out. All 182 occupants were uninjured, and were kept on board until stairs for disembarkation were in place. As of now, the crash is still in investigation by the Norwegian Safety Investigation Authority [1][2]
Aircraft
The aircraft involved was a 24-year-old Boeing 737-8K2, manufactured in 2000, and registered as PH-BXM. It was powered with CFMI CFM56-7B. [1]
On January 17, 2024, it was involved in a taxiway excursion as KLM Flight 1152.[3][4][5]
Accident
The aircraft, carrying 176 passengers and 6 crew members, was taking off from Oslo Airport runway 19L when the main wheel delaminated and damaged the aircraft. Part of the wheels came loose and the hydraulic system was damaged. The crew reported the issue and stop climbing at 5000 ft. Then they decided to perform an emergency landing. As the Oslo Airport was foggy and the visibility was low, the plane diverted to Sandefjord Airport. After landed at runway 18, the plane lost directional stability towards the end of the roll-out. It skidded off to the right of the runway exit.[1][6][7]
According to the KLM spokesperson, there was a loud noise in the cabin shortly after takeoff.[8][9]
Aftermath
The passengers were provided with accommodation, and were transferred to Oslo, [9][10]
Investigation
The Norwegian Safety Investigation Authority has seized the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder as a normal routine. The aircraft has been inspected and released to the airline. [2]
On March 18, 2025, The Norwegian Safety Investigation Authority (NSIA) has upgraded the incident to serious and continues its investigation:
- The tire on the inner left main wheel delaminated when the aircraft was moving at 139 knots.
- As the aircraft rotated the flight crew got indication of a fault with one of the hydraulic systems, the safest course of action was to continue the departure.
- When airborne the flight crew were unable to raise the landing gear.
- Both the part that raises the landing gear and the parts that activate the brakes on one side were damaged when rubber parts from the delaminated tire struck the aircraft.
- The approach and landing at ENTO proceeded normally under the circumstances.
- As the speed was reduced towards the end of the rollout, and the effectivity of the rudder decreased, the aircraft started to deviate to the right of the centreline. Despite crew inputs directional control was lost and the aircraft ran off the side of the runway.[2]
