kMeet is a video conferencing service hosted by Infomaniak SA since April 2020 to help users cope with the COVID-19 pandemic. The service is based on Open source software from Jitsi Meet:.[1] · [2]. Communications are encrypted and the data is transmitted via Infomaniak’s servers, which are based in Switzerland[3].

kMeet requires no registration to use and is free[4]. It’s financed by the company’s paid services[5].

    Features[edit]

kMeet uses the same technology as Jitsi: WebRTC, supported by most modern browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi and Opera. The creation of a meeting is defined via a unique URL. This means that a user account is not required to create or join a meeting. The duration of the meeting and the number of participants are unlimited[6].

The videoconferencing service has incorporated a calendar since September 2020 to allow the planning of events and invitation of participants[7] · [8]

kMeet also offers most of the features of competing tools[9]

    History[edit]

    • The service was rolled out on 1 April 2020 then on 27 April 2020, kMeet underwent a major update that included the ability to schedule meetings; on 10 May 2020, a new version was released with improvements to the UI and background management; on 25 May 2020, kMeet underwent a new modification at the “prejoin” level: the microphone and the camera are activated by default with a background.

Infomaniak is improving kMeet in September 2021 with the addition of a new feature: participants in a video conference can now annotate a shared screen, the person sharing the screen must use the kMeet application available for Windows, Mac or Linux.
