Kaira Jewel Lingo

Kaira Jewel Lingo (born ca. 1974)[1] is a Dharma teacher who began practicing mindfulness who teaches Buddhist meditation, secular mindfulness, and compassion.[2] She teaches in the Vietnamese Zen lineage and the Vipassana tradition, at the intersection of racial, climate and social justice.[2]

Background[edit]

Lingo grew up Christian, in Chicago.[3] She also spent a few years of her childhood living outside Nairobi, Kenya.[1] Her father worked with Martin Luther King, Jr.[3][4] She is Black and biracial.[5]

She earned B.A. and M.A. at Stanford University in Anthropology and Social Sciences.[1][6]

Lingo lived as an ordained nun for 15 years in Thich Nhat Hanh’s monastic community, Plum Village.[2][6] She was ordained as a Buddhist nun in 1999 at age 25,[1] and as a Bhiksuni in 2003.[6]

She became a Zen teacher in 2007,[4] and now leads retreats and provides spiritual mentoring.

Lingo is the author of We Were Made for These Times: Ten Lessons in Moving through Change, Loss and Disruption from Parallax Press.[2][7] She is also the editor of Thich Nhat Hanh's Planting Seeds: Practicing Mindfulness with Children.[8]

She also has written for Tricycle: The Buddhist Review.[9]
