Nafeesah Allen, Ph.D. is a multilingual communications strategist, migration scholar, and contributing writer.[1] She specializes in Iberian and Lusophone histories,[citation needed] as well as race and social policy and frequently covers issues of diversity, personal finance, real estate, parenting, and discrimination. Currently, she is the Head of Public Affairs for the U.S. Embassy in Lima, Peru.[2]

==Early life and education ==Originally from Newark, New Jersey, Allen attended high school at Milton Academy[3] in Milton, Massachusetts.

Allen graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts from Barnard College at Columbia University[4] and holds a postgraduate diploma in Folklore and Cultural Studies from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)[5] in New Delhi, India, where she received the Gold Medal for meritorious academic performance for her ethnographic thesis on women of the Indian Diaspora.[6] She attained a Master of International Affairs at Columbia University, specializing in Latin American languages and literature, as well as race and social policy. She was also awarded an Institute of Latin American Studies fellowship to pursue research on cultural and political representation of Brazil's African Diaspora in the late 20th century.[7]

Allen earned her Ph.D. in Forced Migration from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits)[1] in Johannesburg, South Africa. Her thesis focused on national identity development among the Indian and Pakistani Diaspora in Maputo and it formed the basis for her debt academic book title with Palgrave Macmillan Indo-Mozambicans in Maputo, 1947-1992: Oral Narratives on Identity and Migration. This work focuses on people of Indian and Pakistani origin now living in Mozambique. Highlighting the uniqueness of this migration route, it touches on wider trends of global south-south migration, African and Asian linkages, and Portuguese colonial history.

Allen has published pieces in academic journals (Scholar & Feminist Online [8] and The Journal of International Affairs[9]) and literary publications (Hanging Loose Press' Shooting the Rat and Hanging Loose).
