Biography[edit]

Vallath has been experimenting with Active learning, Blended learning, Experiential learning and the application of Montessori education methods for adults, employing games, drama and innovative classroom activities to make English studies interesting for Indian students.[1] Her innovations in Social entrepreneurship were presented as a paper "Woman as Social Edupreneur: Opportunities, Challenges" at Merton College, and St. John's College, Oxford. She has also presented papers on her entrepreneurial work at other international conferences and is an active champion of social causes. [2] Edupreneur Kalyani Vallath’s eclectic teaching style forms the basis of her successful venture, she says “I mime, I act, I crack jokes and often I cry while taking the students through the fascinating world of literature.”[3]

Imbibing the values of Alternative education, Multiliteracies and Multimodality, she has merged her teaching with associated ventures like a gaming club, a "pseudo-newspaper" called Bard's Times[4] which employs the method of Faction (literature), and learning literature through travel in order to help students get cultural exposure. She has included in her teaching methods the philosophy of life art of Wilhelm Schmid [de], a contemporary German philosopher.[5] The non-profit organization, E-ProF, established by Kalyani Vallath, promotes interdisciplinary studies and professions related to English language and literature.[6][7] A recipient of the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute Doctoral Fellowship for research at the University of British Columbia, Canada,[8] Vallath is also the associate editor of Littcrit, a literary journal.[9]

Vallath runs Total English Solutions in Thiruvananthapuram to help teach English to people living in rural parts of India.[10][1] In her spare time, she enjoys Zumba.[11]

A Contemporary Encyclopedia of British Literature[edit]

Vallath compiled the A Contemporary Encyclopedia of British Literature with Bodhi Tree Books, which is meant for Indian students.[10][7] It is part of a collaborative writing project and is an experiment in evidence-based education.[10][12] Interspersed with pictures and text, divided into sections that have been presented as bullet points with subheads, a technique she adapted from Ernest Hemingway's Iceberg Theory, the volume incorporates the techniques of Postmodernism as against traditional teaching methodologies, and advocates Interactive Learning.[10]
