Karl Toriola
Karl Olutokun Toriola (Born 16 March 1972) is a Nigerian telecommunications engineer who is currently serving as MTN Nigeria Chief Executive.[1] Toriola had previously worked with other telecommunications firms including Vmobile Nigeria (since renamed Airtel Nigeria) where he was Chief Operations and Regional Officer and Ericsson Switzerland. Toriola is the Chairman MTN/Areeba Guinea and Board Member, American Towers Uganda. He won the 2009 Best CTO and Best Network awards.[2][3]
Education
Toriola attended Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria where he earned a bachelor degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering in 1994 before proceeding to University of Wales, Swansea, United Kingdom for a Master’s degree in Communication Systems graduating in 1996.[4] He attended Harvard Business School, USA from 2005 to 2008, and London Business School, United Kingdom in 2009.[5] INSEAD, Singapore (2013); Wharton Business School, USA (2011); and Institute of Management Development (IMD), Switzerland (2006).[6]
Career
Toriola started his telecommunications career in 1995 with Ericsson Switzerland and later transferred to Ericsson Nigeria in 2000 working as Support and Integration Manager for GSM, coordinating mobile networks rollout in Nigeria.[7] After leaving Ericsson Nigeria, he joined Vmobile Nigeria as Chief Operations/Regional Officer and served there for two years (2004-2006). At Vmobile Nigeria, Toriola supervised technical functions following the termination of Econet Wireless International Technical Services Agreement. In July 2006, he switched to MTN Irancell, based in Tehran as Operations Consultant, managing the network roll out until October 2006 when he moved to MTN Nigeria as Chief Technical Officer, Network Group (NWG). In this position, he coordinated Technology Strategy, Capital Projects and Network Rollout.
In 2011, he was appointed CEO MTN Congo Brazzaville in an interim capacity and later appointed CEO MTN Cameroon raising the company’s market share from 51% to 62% and emerged top telecommunication firm in Cameroon. He negotiated the addition of 3G and 4G network, Fibre license and the transfer of part ownership of the WACS submarine cable system to the Government of Cameroon. He obtained Investors in People (IIP) Gold certification for MTN Cameroon making it the first subsidiary of MTN Group to secure the certification. In 2015, Toriola became Group Operating Executive, MTN Group where he supervised MTN subsidiaries in 12 countries and was promoted to Vice President, West and Central Africa for MTN Group in January 2016. He was appointed CEO MTN Nigeria in October 2020[8][9] and assumed office on March 1, 2021. Toriola sits on the board of several companies including UAC of Nigeria Plc, MTN Nigeria Communications Plc and Nigeria Economic Summit Group.[10]
Personal life
Toriola was born at the Seventh Day Adventist Hospital in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria and he is a multi-linguist, who speaks English, French, Yoruba and German fluently.
He has been married to his college sweetheart for over 25 years and they have a daughter.[11]
