Arjun Malhotra

Arjun Malhotra (born 7th January 1949) is a pioneer of the Indian IT industry, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. He along with 5 friends co-founded HCL, the prominent face of Indian IT from back in late 70s’,  and was the Vice Chairman till 1998. Malhotra has a long string of entrepreneurial successes. He serves as the Chairman of SolMark and Magic Software Inc. and is on the Board of several companies. Malhotra gave a boost to telecommunication education in India by endowing and establishing G S Sanyal School of Telecommunication at IIT Kharagpur in 1996.

Early Life[edit]

Malhotra was born in Calcutta, West Bengal in India to Major Mehr Chand Malhotra and Dr. Prabha Malhotra. He spent his early years growing up there with his grandparents, Dr Sunder Lal Hora and Mrs. Vidya Hora.

Education[edit]

Malhotra studied at The Doon School, Dehradun, and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur. He graduated from IIT with B.Tech. (Hons.) in Electronics & Electrical Communication Engineering in 1970 and received the Dr. B.C. Roy Gold Medal for all-round performance in academics and extracurricular activities. In 1985, he attended the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.

Personal Life[edit]

Malhotra is married to Kiran Malhotra and has a daughter, and a son and two grandchildren.

Career[edit]

After graduating Malhotra joined the Delhi Cloth and General Mills Co. Ltd. (DCM) as a Senior Management Trainee (SMT). He was the founding team member of their foray into Electronics, DCM Data Products. In 1975, Malhotra along with Shiv Nadar, Subhash Arora, Yogesh Vaidya, Ajai Chowdhry and Pammi (DS) Puri founded Microcomp Ltd. In 1976, Microcomp started manufacturing microcomputers/minicomputers in association with UP Electronic Corporation (UPTRON). This was the beginning of Hindustan Computers Ltd (HCL). Malhotra helped to take it from a six-person “garage operation” to one of India’s largest Information Technology corporations. Hindustan Computers Ltd (HCL) became market leader through innovative marketing strategies and technology leadership.

Malhotra was the first leading Indian entrepreneur to relocate to USA and took over HCL’s US operation (HCL America  now HCL Technologies) in 1989 and grew it to nearly $100 million annual revenues. In 1992 he ran the HCL-HP joint venture in India, and in 1996 he set up and ran the joint venture with Deluxe Corporation (this later listed as EFunds on NYSE). He consolidated and grew HCL operations in Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand. He served as Vice Chairman of HCL from its inception till 1998.

Malhotra founded TechSpan in 1998 with funding from Goldman Sachs and Walden International. He later merged TechSpan with Headstrong (erstwhile James Martin & Co) and built an end-to-end IT services organization. Malhotra served as Chairman and CEO of Headstrong. He led the seamless integration across businesses and cultures, resulting in recognition of Headstrong as one of the fastest-growing IT-based Financial Services companies. Headstrong was sold to Genpact in 2011 for $550 million.

Malhotra currently serves on the board of corporations and several start-ups - Entercoms, Lumis Partners, Evolko Inc, Mapmygenome, Evolphin Software, A T Group. He is the Chairman of SolMark and Magic Software Inc.

Philanthropic and Social Work[edit]

Malhotra and his wife Kiran has been engaged in a number of charitable  activities.

Malhotra was a major donor in setting up the Advanced VLSI Lab and the Golden Jubilee Network  at IIT Kharagpur in 2001. He endowed the G S Sanyal School of Telecommunications at IIT Kharagpur in 1996. The school was named after his former teacher at IIT Kharagpur, Prof. G S Sanyal. In 2012 Malhotra again endowed the M N Faruqui Center for Innovation at IIT Kharagpur in the memory of another of his former teacher’s, Prof. M N Faruqui.

Malhotra is also one of the founding members of SPIC-MACAY, the Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture among Youth and is presently on their Advisory Board. SPIC-MACAY is today India’s largest non-government, not for profit, social and cultural organization.

Malhotra is on the Boards of a number of Not for Profit institutions like PARFI (Pan IITians Action for India) and Charities Aid foundation, India.

Honours and Awards[edit]

Malhotra was awarded the Albert Einstein Technology Medal for 2001. The Award salutes the high tech industry’s vanguard who “with their vision…have revolutionized the perception of time and space, linking mankind with ever growing speed and ingenuity. Their cutting-edge breakthroughs have empowered countless others.”

Malhotra was made a Life Fellow of IIT Kharagpur in 2002 for his professional achievements and contribution to the institute and was awarded a Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) in 2012. .

The Institution of Engineers (India) has named Malhotra an Eminent Engineering Personality and in 2013, Punjab Technical University conferred an Honorary PhD on him.

Professional Society Honors[edit]

Malhotra is a Fellow of the Institute of Electronics & Telecommunication Engineers, India (FIETE), and a Member of the Institute of Engineers, India (MIE). He is a Member of Indian Public Schools Society and is on the Board of Governors of The Doon School. He is a past Co-Chair of the Global Pan-IIT Alumni Association and has served on the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Management, Udaipur, The Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management, Shillong and other Engineering and Management Institutions.

Malhotra is a Charter Member of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE), a non-profit network with over 10,000 members across 61 chapters in 13 countries. He has previously served as the Chairman of the TiE Global Board. TiE fosters global entrepreneurship through mentoring, networking and education.

Malhotra is currently the President of IIT Kharagpur Foundation USA, a registered society promoting networking among alumni of IIT Kharagpur in the United States of America and supporting initiatives of IIT Kharagpur.
