Katell Chevalier (born September 30, 1984 in Calais, France), as an artist known simply as Katell, is a French singer-songwriter. Her career as a professional singer began in 2010, the year in which she graduated from her vocal studies at the ArtEZ Conservatory in Enschede and won the prestigious Concours de la Chanson, hosted by the Alliance Française. During her studies, Katell started to write and compose her own songs.

In 2012, Katell released her debut EP “Emmène-Moi”, and in 2014 her first full-length LP “Cœur d’artichaut” followed. 2018 saw the release of another EP, titled “J’avance”.

Biography

Katell Chevalier was born to a Dutch mother and French father[1], and was raised primarily with the French language. She developed an interest in music at a very young age, and first sang for an audience at her school at the age of 9. The spontaneous performance sparked an enthusiasm to take up singing in a children's choir.[2]

After finishing middle school in Brussels, Katell moved to Paris when she was 18. Three years later she moved again to pursue her vocal studies at the ArtEZ conservatory in Enschede, from which she graduated in 2010. Two years later, Katell released her first EP, titled “Emmène-Moi”. In 2014 Katell’s first full-length album “Cœur d’artichaut” was released.

In 2016 Katell, meanwhile living in Amsterdam, joined the 7th season of the Dutch music television show The Voice of Holland[3], in which she reached the second live show singing ‘Paris’, her French translation of the popular Dutch song ‘Brabant’ by Guus Meeuwis. The single peaked at 17th in the Dutch iTunes Top100 charts.

In 2017 Katell turned her focus to theater with her music show "Deux Voix", in which she, pianoplayer Ton Snijders and live electronics specialist Mathijs van Til performed songs by Jacques Brel and Stromae, blending the styles of both famous Belgian singers. Snijders and Van Til also played a considerable role in the release of Katell’s EP “J’avance” in 2018, which they both played on and produced.

The song "Amsterdam-Paris", released in the summer of 2020, features Katell singing in both French and Dutch for the first time. It was written for Katell’s theater tour "Retour Amsterdam-Paris", which was to follow later that year, but was however postponed until the fall of 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
