Kavita Shah is an American jazz singer and songwriter. Shah was named by DownBeat as the "Best Graduate Jazz Vocalist" in 2012 and in 2013 she won an ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award.[1]
Early years
Shah grew up in Manhattan, where she studied classical piano and performed regularly at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center as a member of the Young People's Chorus of NYC.[2][3]
Shah earned a B.A. from Harvard College in Latin American Studies. OHer senior thesis was awarded the Kenneth D. Maxwell Thesis Prize in Brazilian Studies and the Cultural Agents Thesis Prize.[2] Shah later received her Master's in Jazz Voice from Manhattan School of Music.[1]
Music
Shah has collaborated with artists such as Sheila Jordan, Cecile McLorin Salvant, Steve Wilson, Lionel Loueke and Linda Oh. She has also performed at venues including Cornelia Street Cafe, Minton's Playhouse, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Kennedy Center, Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Vermont Jazz Center.[1][4][5]
Shah's 2014 debut album, Visions, was produced by Loueke and released on saxophonist Greg Osby's record label Inner Circle Music. The musicians featured on the album include Shah on vocals, Loueke on guitar, Steve Wilson on saxophone and flautist and percussionist Rogerio Boccato.[6][4]
Shah leads a jazz quintet called the Brazil Trio and has regularly worked with contemporary composers in ensembles ranging from chamber groups to big band to jazz philharmonic.[2] As well she heads the 3rd World Orquestra which is a 13-piece ensemble with tabla, kora, rhythm section, and strings. Shah is also a member of the Steve Newcomb Orchestra.[7]
Interplay, an album of duets with bassist François Moutin, was released by Dot Time.[8] The DownBeat review of the release commented on "Moutin's dark, reedy bass acting like a dance partner to Shah's pliant, flickering vocals, which retain a tonal richness even through passages of extreme agility."[8]
