Keko Hainswheeler is a British costume designer,[1] fashion and wardrobe director[2] working between London, New York, Los Angeles.[3]
Career[edit]
Keko was born in Birmingham, United Kingdom.[4] His farther is a landscape Gardener and mother is working in the Birmingham UK jewellery quarter.[5] Keko Hainswheeler is a costume designer, fashion designer and wardrobe director working in the music-entertainment, fashion, and advertising industries.[6]
Keko’s designs and custom fashion pieces have adorned by celebrities and influential recording artists like including Lady Gaga,[7] Katy Perry,[8] Jessie J,[9] Dizzee Rascal,[10] Take That,[10] Skunk Anansie,[10] Grimes,[11] Bat for Lashes, Natalie Portman,[12] Naomi Campbell,[13] Madonna[14] and Nicki Minaj.[15]
His list of global collaborators includes fashion publications V Magazine,[16] Dazed and Confused,[17] Hunger, Vogue Hommes Japan,[18] Vanity Fair,[11] the Stylist’s Nicola Formichetti,[19] Johnny Wujek,[20] Jay Massacret,[16] Patti Wilson,[21] Anna Trevelyan,[22] and photographers Mario Testino,[23] Hedi Slimane,[24] Tim Walker,[10] Ellen von Unwerth,[10] Rankin,[25] Sølve Sundsbø, Steven Klein, and Terry Tsiolis amongst others.[16] As well costume & wardrobe designer for advertisement campaigns for companies including 3 Mobile,[26] Yamaha,[27] Camper shoes,[26] Vitamin Water[26] and Rolls royce.[28]
Recording artist's, global tours, performances and music videos[edit]
Keko worked with Lady Gaga,[29] conceptualising and fabricating whole sections for The Fame Ball Tour and record breaking The Monster Ball Tour (the highest grossing tour in history by a debut recording artist) creating looks for Gaga and her dancers.[30] The designer also created numerous custom looks for Lady Gaga’s stage/television performances and music videos including the feathered neck brace, that received global press/media acclaim,[31] worn by Gaga for the MTV Music Awards red carpet and looks for Gaga’s stage performance.[32][33]
For Katy Perry's Prismatic World Tour the designer looks include the creation of a custom made animatronic moving butterfly headpiece consisting of thousands of hand cut butterflies and encrusted in Swarovski crystal.[34]
As part of Nicki Minaj "Juice world tour" Keko created a series of pieces for the artist including custom gold plated armoured shoes, gloves and adornments.[20]
Keko has costume designed pieces for lead singer Skin and the band 3 European tours for the band Skunk Anansie including, Wonderlustre, Black Traffic, and 25Live@25.[35]
Pink’s Beautiful Trauma World Tour, he created a series of crowns for the artists tour that were showcased on all global promotional materials as well as merchandise and stage imagery world wide.[36]
For Madonna's global launch of Medellín with MTV, Keko joined up with Gregory Kara to create a custom jacket look referencing Madonna's iconic style and alter ego Madam X.[37]
Keko worked closely and costumed Melanie Martinez K-12 Tour as lead costume designer creating the whole tour to include hand made trims, print and custom footwear for the artists and dancers.[38]
Fashion design-consultancy[edit]
Keko has designed and creatively consulted on a number of projects for the clothing brand Diesel, working closely with brands artistic director Nicola Formichetti from 2014 to 2017.[39] He also created Diesel’s 35th anniversary consulting and designing the global "Diesel TributeCollection" and The "Diesel Leather Tribute Collection" paying homage to the brand.[40] Keko also designed and consulted on runway looks for Diesel's Spring/Summer '15 runway collection which opened Shanghai Fashion Week.[41]
Museums exhibitions[edit]
The Victoria and Albert Museum has exhibited his work[42] and he was invited by the Victoria and Albert Museum London to present a public talk as a result of his recognized achievements, discussing his process, influences, and career to date.[43]
At the Design Museum, London, as part of the exhibition entitled “Women Fashion and Power” Keko worked for recording artist Skin, was exhibited as part of a global touring exhibition chosen for their striking visual effect and strong expression of female empowerment.[44]
At the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles his works for Katy Perry frock and roll Prismatic World tour were featured as part of the exhibition spanning iconic costumes from Katy’s performances.[45]
