Kenneth Edwin Richards (né Edwin Charles Richards; October 9, 1917 – April 28, 1998) was an American retired lieutenant colonel and businessman. He was best known as the father of Kim Richards and Kyle Richards.
Richards was also known as the second husband of socialite Kathleen Avanzino.[1][2]
Early life[edit]
Edwin Charles Richards[3][4] was born in Everittstown, New Jersey on October 9, 1917, as the younger of two sons to Canadian-born parents, Laura Maude Richards (née Benson;[5] 1889–1967)[6] and Reverend Kenneth George Richards (1889–1956).[7] His elder brother, Allan Arthur Richards, was born on July 15, 1915.[8] He died from acute nephritis on May 15, 1922, at the age of six. He was interred at Evergreens Cemetery on May 17.[9] Richards came from Welsh ancestry.[10]
Richards graduated from Wesleyan University with his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1939. He was a member of the Chi Psi (ΧΨ) fraternity.[4]
Career[edit]
Richards was drafted to join the United States Army on October 16, 1940, at the age of 23.[11] He was enlisted on December 13, 1940.[12] He held the rank of lieutenant colonel. He retired in 1945, at the age of 28.[4] Richards began his professional career as a salesman at Fiduciary Counsel, Inc.[13]
Richards served on the Advisory Editorial Board for the Surgeon General between 1948 and 1955. He worked for numerous women's apparel industries. He had a career as president, vice president and consultant which spanned 50 years.[4]
Personal life[edit]
Richards legally changed his name from Edwin Charles Richards to Kenneth Edwin Richards at the age of 23.[3]
Marriages, children and family[edit]
Richards was married three times, and had five children from his first two marriages.[14]
Richards married Lois Evelyn Henderson in the District of Columbia on December 12, 1942.[15] They had three children together; Kenneth Alan Richards Jr. (1943–1998), Diane Louise Parmley[16] (née Richards; 1946–2007)[17] and Grant Benson Richards (1947–2009).[18] The couple separated in 1962, after Richards began an affair with Avanzino.[19] Their divorce was finalized in 1963.[20] Henderson died on February 21, 2011. She was 92.[21]
Richards married socialite and casting director Kathleen Avanzino in Queens, New York on January 28, 1964.[1] They had two daughters together; Kimberly Richards and Kyle Richards.[22] He gained a stepdaughter upon this marriage.[23] The couple separated in 1972.[4] Their divorce was finalized on May 17, 1979.[2]
Richards married Sylvia Marie Benedict in 1979. He gained three grown stepchildren upon this marriage.[24]
Richards had 21 grandchildren including; Brooke, Farrah and Alexia. At least two more grandchildren including Sophia and Portia were born after his death.[25]
Death[edit]
Richards died at Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas, Nevada on April 28, 1998. He was 80.[26] He was cremated at Desert Memorial Park.[24][27]
