Kendriya Vidyalaya Pattom, Thiruvananthapuram (KV Pattom) is a co-educational day school established in 1964[1] by Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), an autonomous organization under the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education (India), located at Pattom (Thiruvananthapuram) in Kerala, India.[2]

History[edit]

Kendriya Vidyalaya Pattom (KV Pattom) was established in1964.[3] The first batch of Higher Secondary Grade (Class XI)[4] students graduated from the school in 1969 and 10+2 System began in the year 1977. The school was selected by KVS for the 'Model School Scheme' in 1997 and 'Smart School Scheme' in 2005.[5] The school started functioning in two shifts from 2004. Smt. Gomathy Krishnanand, Shri P. K. Uma Sankar IAS and Gayathri Radhakrishnan were the first Principal, Chairman and student of the school.[6]

Present[edit]

The school currently has two shhifts and houses more than 4000 students and 100 staff members. KV Pattom follows the Curriculum prescribed by CBSE.[7]

Achievements[edit]

The school was ranked as the best Government day school in the country in the Education World India School Rankings for the years 2021[10], 2017[11], 2016[12] and 2015[13]. It won the Reading4Pleasure School Award - 2020, instituted by Food4Thought Foundation, Hyderabad[14] and KVS-Intel Best Integration of Technology in Education Award for Schools in 2009[15] The project Library Junction was selected for NCERT National Award for Innovative Practices and Experiments in Education for Schools and Teacher Education Institutions in 2011[16]

The school has Smart Classrooms, Science Laboratories, Computer Laboratories, Library, Resource rooms, One Activity Room, One ATAL Tinkering Laboratory and 4 Common Staff rooms.[17]

Library[edit]

The library hosts 25000 books, 55 periodicals, 8 newspapers, 400 multimedia DVDs, 10 Kindle e-readers, study materials, previous years' question papers, rare books, internet search facility and an online catalogue.[18] The library launched a blog in 2007 followed by an E-Magazine and a portal for Online Home works and Assignments. Resources include a Virtual Library, a Digital Library, an Audio Library and a Smartphone interface[19] to the Library. A social responsibility initiative 'Gift a Book & Get a Friend' was started by the library in 2013.[20] Face a Book Challenge is a popular summer reading challenge programme run by the library since 2014.[21] The library has created a virtual library environment using a number of web based tools during the Emergency Remote Teaching period emerged during the pandemic in 2021-2022.[22] The library projects (Library Junction & Face a Book Challenge) won NCERT and KVS Innovation and Experimentation Awards in 2011 and 2016. Library was nominated for the LibTech Award Program for the effective integration of Technology in libraries in 2019. It also won the 'Reading4Pleasure School Award in 2020.[23]

Sports & Games[edit]

Facilities include a Football field, Volleyball court, Fully fancy coloured Basketball and Badminton courts, Roller Skating Rink and Primary Children's Parks.[24]

Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL)[edit]

An Atal Tinkering Lab was established at KV Pattom in 2018 by Atal Innovation Mission, NITI Ayog, Govt of India, to foster curiosity, creativity, and imagination in young minds; and inculcate skills such as design mindset, computational thinking, adaptive learning, physical computing etc.[25]

School Life[edit]

All students are hosted in four Houses and 22 Clubs function with an objective of the overall development of the students. The school organizes 1 Kerala Girls Battalion NCC, and Scouts & Guides.[26]
