Kengchakaj Kengkarnka (Gheng/chAH /kad or เก่งฉกาจ เก่งการค้า) is a Thai jazz pianist, composer, and creative musician from Bangkok, Thailand who is based in NYC.
Kengkarnka received 3 stars in Downbeat Magazine[1] The New York City Jazz Record [2] and was featured in Jazziz.[3] for his debut album Lak lan.
Kengkarnka has been performing at venues such as 55 Bar, Bar Next Door, ShapeShifter Lab, Zinc Bar, Tomi Jazz, many Jazz Festivals including Huahin Jazz Festival, Samui Jazz Festival, Thailand Jazz International Conference, Cotai Jazz and Blues Festival(Macau, China) as well as a key performer celebrating International Jazz Day in Bangkok, Thailand.[4] and many more. Besides, during 2015–2017, Kengkarnka was a performance artist in residence at International House NYC, organizing house concerts, jazz nights, jam sessions and musical directing a musical.[5] He is currently with label Outside in Music.[6]
Expanded description
Kengkarnka redirected his career from Industrial design to study Jazz music in his early 20s.[7] Kengkarnka attended Conservatory of Music at Rangsit University and earned his bachelor's degree with a full scholarship where he studied under the direction of Dr. Denny Euprasert. In 2017, with funding from Fulbright scholarship, Kengchakaj moved to New York City and earned a master's degree from Manhattan School of Music.[8][9] He studied privately with Ted Rosenthal and Phil Markowitz as well as renowned faculty at MSM, such as Garry Dial, Rogerio Boccato, Scott Wendholt, Jeremy Manasia, Gretchen Parlato, Theo Bleckman, Kate McGarry, Todd Reynold, and many more. Recently, Kengkarnka joined an artist residency at Banff International Workshop[10] for Jazz and Creative Music under the direction of MacArthur "Genius Grant" recipient Vijay Iyer and Tyshawn Sorey.
As an educator, Kengkarnka gave a workshop at Rangsit University, Silpakorn University, School for poetic computation [11], and Jazz Happen workshop series as well as taught at YES Academy Thailand, RSU Jazz Camp, Thailand Jazz Workshop, New Frontier Music School, Naissance Music School, and NYMA school.
Philosophical and/or political views
Kengkarnka's work is embedded in African-American derived music infused with the aesthetic of Thai music.[12] He uses improvised music to connect people collectively by evoking sensation, a shared experience, that will create a bond among performers and audiences.
