Carol Hodge is a British singer-songwriter and keyboard player known for her own solo career as well as being a member of former Crass[1] vocalist Steve Ignorant's [2] band Slice of Life and Ryan Hamilton & The Harlequin Ghosts.[3] She has previously played with bands as diverse as Synko, Sadie Hawkins Dance, WRECKS, Bad Taste Barbies and Electra Glide before releasing her debut album "Lo! And Behold" under the name of Crystal Grenade an album of piano and voice in 2013. [4]
Carol was born with a rare condition called cleft symbrachydactyly [5] which caused her to have just two fingers on her left hand. She has acknowledged this condition in some of her merchandise and often describes herself as a "Seven-fingered pianist".
Carol was born in Greenock, Scotland but grew up in Cumbria before attending University in Manchester and has resided in Huddersfield since 2018.[6] Whilst living in Manchester she was voted the "Manchester Mona Lisa" in a search to find a Mancunian answer to the Leonardo Da Vinci painting for an exhibition at the Museum of Science and Industry. [7]
Since 2018 she has recorded and released her music under her own name starting with the album "Hold On To That Flame" in 2018[8] followed by "Savage Purge" in 2020[9] and "The Crippling Space Between" in 2021.[10]
In March 2021 Carol published her Patreon page joining the community of artists using that platform to communicate directly with fans who could subscribe to different tiers monthly in order to help support her musical work and receive rewards such as new music demos and digital downloads of her earlier solo albums.[11]
In September 2021 the rescheduled Steve Ignorant Plays CRASS tour started after being delayed by the COVID-19 Pandemic, the first date at The Old Cold Store, Nottingham[12] on the 24th September was recorded and released as a limited edition of 300 CD's which quickly sold out leaving the title only available on digital platforms.
