Betty Blocks is a cloud-based application Platform as a Service (aPaaS) that allows users to create enterprise-grade applications with visual modelling and a drag-and-drop functionality.[4] Compared to low-code development platforms that target IT professionals to speed up existing processes, Betty Blocks software focusses on the empowerment of a specific type of business user: the citizen developer.[5] The purpose of the platform is to align business and IT by facilitating organisations with a collaborative tool.[6] The software is ready-made and consists of reusable blocks that are centrally sanctioned and supported by an organization’s IT department.[7] The platform is available from both a self-service model and a corporate licensing model that is ranged based on the complexity of the applications.[8] All plans include hosting, automatic platform updates and back-ups of metadata and application data.[9]

Betty Blocks was founded by brothers Tim and Chris Obdam in February 2012. The platform was originally created as a personal in-house solution to simplify application development among their own office workers.[11]
Betty Blocks is the first no-code development platform to receive an ISO/IEC 27001 certification in 2017.[12]
