The name Kertanegara comes from the name of the last king of the Singasari Kingdom, Kertanagara who ruled around 1268–1292. According to the Rajasa dynasty genealogy, Kertanagara was the son of Wisnuwardhana who was appointed as yuwaraja (crown prince) during his reign.
History
The Kertanegara train was first time operated by KAI on 10 March 2021 (1 month after effected of the enactment of new train travel chart 2021) by extending one of the Malioboro Express routes which previously only reached Yogyakarta.
