Rail Container Java is a freight train with the Intermodal container type that is operated by KAI Logistik (Subsidiary of PT KAI) to facilitate the distribution of goods by land and to reduce the burden on roads due to the large number of container trucks along the national highway Java. Container trains are the trains with the longest train in Indonesia after rail long train coal that located in Sumatra.

With the demands of the Indonesian people, especially in Java and Sumatra, growing every year, the existence of container trains is crucial. Containers are easily transferred to various types of vehicles, including ship, truck, and train. They are also ergonomically designed to facilitate the mobility of goods transport.

History

Container trains in Java, Indonesia were first operated around 1985. Initially, the container cars were coupled with regular trains. Starting in 1987, the Container Block Train System (SKAB) for the Tanjung Priok station-Gedebage station and Jakarta Gudang station-Surabaya Pasar Turi station began operating, which was a service for the Jakarta-Surabaya route which was then known as Antaboga.

In the 2000s, a container train service between Tonjong Baru and Kalimas began to open. However, the route was shortened to Tanjung Priok because the port in Banten was still quiet. The train ended its journey at Pasosos Station so that containers could be unloaded. In addition, this train also served the Kalimas-Rambipuji and Solo Jebres-Semarang Gudang routes, but both routes eventually stopped operating forever.

Technical

Operational

Following the establishment of PT Kalog in 2009, rail freight management has become increasingly well-organized. Currently, Kalog and KAI have optimized container train travel, particularly between Jakarta and Bandung and Jakarta and Surabaya. Containers that can be transported by train range in length from 20 to 40 inches. Container train operations can increase the amount of cargo transported, ensure more timely and faster arrivals, ensure safety, and offer relatively low costs. Kalog operates 30 flat cars to support the smooth operation of container trains between Jakarta and Surabaya and vice versa.

Fleet stock

The most common flatcar is a flatcar designed specifically for the "PPCW" type (meaning "plaatsenwagen" with two axles, using Westinghouse compressed air brakes). These cars are primarily used to transport containers on the northern line.

Unlike the Gedebage line, which uses "PKPKW" flatcars, these flatcars are designed with deep grooves to prevent containers from hitting the Sasaksaat railway tunnel when container trains enter it. However, these "PKPKW" type flatcars are currently being temporarily conserved at the Gedebage Station Depot, the Cipinang Station Depot, and the Manggarai Yasa Center, and are being replaced by "PPCW" type flatcars for the Gedebage-Tanjung Priok line.
