Kaligung is Indonesian passenger agglomeration rail, operated by Kereta Api Indonesia. It runs between Semarang Poncol, Tegal, Brebes, and Cirebon Prujakan.
The name "Kaligung" is taken from the name of one of the rivers in Central Java, Kali Gung, which is located in Tegal Regency and Tegal.
History
On 4 February 1999, the Kaligung train launched by PT KAI using a fleet of diesel rail trains (KRD) MCW with business and economy class services connecting Semarang with Tegal. At that time, the number of trips on the train was four round trips a day.
On 1 December 2010, PT KAI launched the Kaligung Mas train, one of its flagship services serving business and executive classes, operating using the Cirebon Express.[2] Based on the enactment of new train travel chart (gapeka) 2010, the Kaligung train also serves the Semarang-Slawi line.[3]
In between 2010 and 2012, The Kaligung Economy class trains were replaced with economy class trains pulled by locomotives. Previously, Kaligung used C-KRDEs, which were then sent to the Solo Balapan Locomotive Depot to be used as auxiliary trains for the operation of the Prambanan Express.
In between 2012 and 2014, This increased the number of train journeys, as well as merging services by combining the Kaligung and Kaligung Mas train.
Start on 12 January 2016, This train uses refurbished economy-class carriages—decorated with wood carvings themed "Borobudur Temple" and a relief on the power-train dining car—to improve passenger service. The train's theme aims to highlight Central Java's tourism potential.[4]
As of 7 February 2017, This train set was changed to an economy class train set produced in 2016 by PT INKA, the previous train set was transferred to operate the Greater Bandung local train.
In between 2017 and 2019, The number of stops on several Kaligung train journeys has been increased so that it can serve passengers getting on/off at Batang Station.[5] In addition, the Kaligung train line was extended to Brebes[6] and was extended again to Cirebon Prujakan since the enactment of new train travel chart 2019 came into effect on 1 December 2019.[7]
