Kevin B. Morrison (born January 27, 1990) is a Democratic member of the Cook County Board of Commissioners, representing the 15th district in the northwest suburbs of Chicago[1]. He was elected in November 2018 after defeating the incumbent, Tim Schneider, who is also chair of the Illinois Republican Party.[2] Having been sworn in on December 3rd, 2018[3], Morrison is the first openly LGBT member[4] [5] of the board as well as its youngest member.[6] He is also the first Democrat in history to represent the 15th district.[7]

Early life and political career[edit]

Morrison was born and raised in Elk Grove Village in a family of Italian and Polish extraction. He graduated from DePaul University with a degree in Political Science and Environmental Science while helping manage his family’s restaurant. Morrison’s first experience as a community organizer was in 2012 on State Representative Robert F. Martwick, Jr.'s successful campaign for the Illinois House of Representatives[8]. He also organized for for State Senator Omar Aquino during his run for alderman in 2015. Morrison went on to roles in Iowa and Ohio during the 2016 United States Presidential Election.[9]

Public service[edit]

Morrison interned for various members of the Chicago City Council during his time in college. He most recently served as Special Projects Coordinator for Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi.[9]

2018 campaign for commissioner[edit]

Morrison entered the March 2018 Democratic primary for the Cook County Board of Commissioners and defeated Ravi Raju by an extremely close margin of 10 votes out of more than 23,000 cast.[10] He then commenced a general election campaign against incumbent Republican Tim Schneider. During the course of this campaign, he was the target of perceived homophobic attacks in mailers sent by Schneider.[11] [12] [13] This incident received widespread press attention, including a national story in The Advocate.[14] Morrison went on to win the general election against Schneider by nearly 10 percentage points.[7]
