Kevin H. Knuth is a physicist at the University at Albany (SUNY) and a ufologist.

Education[edit]

Knuth received a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh in 1988, a Master of Science in Physics from Montana State University in 1990, and a PhD in Physics (with a minor in Mathematics) from the University of Minnesota (1995).[1]

Academic career[edit]

Knuth specializes in applying Bayesian and maximum entropy methods to the design of machine learning algorithms for data analysis applied to the physical sciences.[2][3] He has also researched autonomous experimental design[4][5][6] and question-asking machines.[7][8][9] Knuth developed the Knuth Algorithm for histogram binning that is used in Wolfram Mathematica to calculate the "balance likelihood and prior probability of a piecewise uniform mode".[10][11] He is Editor-in-Chief of the journal Entropy,[12][13]

Ufology[edit]

Knuth serves as vice president of UAPx, a non-profit organization that aims to conduct field research about so-called "Unidentified Aerial Phenomena".[14][15] He is also an affiliate of Avi Loeb's Galileo Project, a group of scientists convened to discuss investigation of UFOs.[16] He has been quoted in the media on the topic.[17][18]
