Kevin Lewis (born October 15, 1998), better known by his Stage name Kfresh, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, fashion model, actor, and entrepreneur. He received initial recognition from his single, She Knows, released in March 2019.
Early life[edit]
Kevin Lewis was born October 15, 1998, in Lawrenceville, Georgia, United States, to a Jamaican Father, Basil, and Jamaican Mother, Rosemarie. Up until his mid teens, Kevin mainly focused on sports, participating in Mill Creek High School’s Basketball, Track, and Cross Country team along with AAU basketball. “While I was in middle school up to my sophomore year of high school, I was convinced that I wanted to be a celebrity. Before I was exposed to the entertainment industry, my aim was to be a professional athlete.”, he says. Kevin began to shift his focuses after attending a modeling audition with his sister. “I was really only there to watch at first.”, Kevin goes on to say, “it wasn’t until I was approached by a scout for an even bigger event where he told me that he liked my look and personally invited me to the showcase. Before I knew it a couple months later I was walking the runway in front of scouts representing agencies from across the world. It was pretty nerve wracking at first because I wasn’t just walking, we also had to memorize a commercial 1 month prior to the event, and when it was time to finally recite it, I had to say this thing in front of a couple thousand people. I was used to crowds since I did sports throughout high school but actually speaking in front of this many people was overwhelming at first. Surprisingly, I didn’t do as bad as I thought I would since I had practiced my lines countless times before.” At the age of 16 following his Sophomore year, Kevin was offered his first contract to sign with a Model and Talent Agency. Once signed, he began to pay the world of entertainment some more attention and at first, struggling to balance it with high school. “I was obsessed”, he said, “I really can’t explain it, but when it comes to modeling and acting, whether it was days practicing to perfect a walk for runway, or having to give up time with friends just to apply for auditions, everything from the challenges, to the harsh feeling of rejection that came with the industry, I fell in love with it all. To make it better, the day I decided to poke at music, it wasn’t long until I took that serious too. I loved how it could be used as a gateway to expressing myself. I never had to fight anyone, confront them on something I knew would get me kicked out of school, nothing like that, I put it all in the music. This industry comes with a lot of challenges but Ive always thought that the beautiful thing about it all is the feeling you get when your visions and dreams become reality. It makes everything you had to struggle to overcome worth it. That’s why I never quit and would never stop now, I love this shit.” After getting his diploma from Mill Creek High School May, 2017, he started college shortly after. In the Summer of 2017, his first semester at Georgia State University began.
Musical Style[edit]
In an interview with USA Blog Network with Carl Jones, Kfresh describes his style by referring to a word one of his favorite artists, Tory Lanez would use, he called it Swavey. “I think he put it perfectly when he talked about the day an age we live in where a lot of rappers don’t just rap anymore, they sing too. Mixing genres together that 20 years ago people would never believe things like this would happen. With me, I consider my genre to fall between Hip hop and Pop music. I’ve even found myself trying R&B as well and so far I haven’t gotten too many bad reviews, which is great. I think, like Tory, I would describe myself as swavey.”
Business Career[edit]
Kevin has not only established himself as an entrepreneur within the music industry but also the fashion world as well. Being the founder and CEO of his Company Kifsfashion, Kevin has proven to be a multitalented individual.[1] The company has worked as an outlet for brands as well as other models and people in general to advertise their products or show off their own style. “I believe that your style is an extension of you, anyone can express themselves with what they wear. And fashion has never had rules, which is why I love it as do many others. My vision for Kifs is to not only to be a great and positive community on social media or for product promotion. My goal is for it to be somewhere whether it be our website or socials, that the public can go to for them to just be themselves. On top of reposting or advertising, we also run photo or video shoots of different people who are willing to reveal their style to the world.”
Artistry[edit]
Lewis has cited a number of artists as his own inspiration, one of them being Chris Brown. Lewis emphasizes, “Watching him from a young age, his dancing talent was always something that interested me. I’ve made an effort to work on, and develop my own style in dancing as well as finding inspiration for my music from him.” In “Piña Colada”, he gives an example of Chris Browns influence musically as many listeners have felt the same “vibe” to the track. “I wanted this one to be different from any song that I had recorded thus far, my boy sent me the hook and I immediately knew that this could be something special for me and my listeners.” Artists such as Rich the Kid, Tory Lanez, and Nav (rapper) have also been inspirations in his life. “If you were to ask me who I would put my style closest to then I would say Nav (rapper). My most successful track’s beat has a similar sound to something I’d usually hear him use. Of course what makes me different is that I also take different aspects from others that I grew up listening to and molded it into my own. I would say it’s one of the great things about music, people coming into their own in a unique way.”[2]
Music critics have also commended Lewis’s introduction to the music industry, recognizing his unique sound as well as his versatility. “cranking out bars and rhymes. The next, he is smoothly melodizing through a chorus, bringing the festive energy to an all time high.” [3]
