Khaitan Public School is a school in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. The school is often accused of steep fee hikes; harassing and expelling students whose parents resist fee hikes. This has led to numerous parents protests.[1][2][3]

History[edit]

It was established in 2001 by liquor businessman G. N. Khaitan who ran distillery Radico Khaitan which manufactures alcohol, Indian Made Foreign Liquor and country liquor. The school is affiliated with C.B.S.E board.

Controversies[edit]

2009 Fees hike and students discrimination[edit]

The school was accused of discrimination and harassment by some parents in 2009. The DIOS asked school them not to discriminate the children and warned to cancel the No Objection Certificate issued to the school.

2010 Fees hike and students expulsion[edit]

The school arbitrarily increased the fees by 40% in 2010 and expelled 246 students who could not pay revised fees which lead to parents protest outside school gates. The school had to withdraw expulsion after the intervention of district administration. The District Magistrate of Ghaziabad in media interview said "They (school authorities) should roll back the notices and abide by the High Court ruling on the matter".[1]

2017 Student expulsion and parents protest due to fees hike[edit]

The school caused a major controversy after it expelled students as their parents couldn't pay increased fees.[4][5]

The school lodged FIR against parents who protested the arbitrary fees hike. Taking cognizance of the issue, the state government formed 9 member committee to look into allegations.[6]

Around 100 parents locked school gates after it expelled 35 students over non-payment of increased fees. The school later retaliated by filing police complaint against protesting parents.[2] The private schools cartel closed the school to protest against “unnecessary public demonstration” and “undue interference by the district administration”. [7]

2020 COVID-19 pandemic[edit]

The school was accused by parents of harassment and of stopping online classes of students who were unable to pay fees due to job loss during the COVID-19 pandemic. The school stopped online classes of many students whose parents were facing difficulties in paying fees during the COVID-19 pandemic. The school was also accused of stopping online classes of students to pressure the government.[8]

The parents protested the blocking of their wards online classes by gathering at school with torch light symbolizing that knowledge cannot be suppressed. The school was issued notices to comply to government order. The school allegedly ignored the government orders and gave legal notices to the parents.[9]

Allegations of fraud, forgery and illegal recovery[edit]
