Kim Lowe
Kim Lowe (born 1967)[1] is a New Zealand artist.
Biography[edit]
Kim Lowe is an artist and printmaker based in Christchurch, New Zealand. Her paternal grandparents were Chinese and arrived in Invercargill, New Zealand in 1919. Her maternal grandparents were a combination of Scottish, Irish and English heritage. Her husband is part Māori. Lowe brings this mix of cultural heritage into her art exploring Taoist concepts of Yin and Yang, the balance of positive and negative. She likens the Chinese Luo Shu pattern, based on the magic square of nine to the Māori kowhaiwhai patterns and Celtic knots, all of which can symbolise ancestral history. The art of printmaking began in China, a fact that also connects Lowe this art form. At Art College in Dunedin she was inspired by lecturer and printmaker, Marilynn Webb who encouraged her to acknowledge her culture and heritage in her art.[2]
Lowe attended the University of Canterbury's School of Fine Arts where she gained her Master of Fine Arts (Distinction) in 2007/2008.[3]
In 2019, Lowe became the 32nd recipient of the Olivia Spencer Bower Award in 2019 which provides a grant of $30,000 and a residency in the Christchurch Arts Centre.[4][5]
The Silence of the Brush exhibition in 2020 at the University of Canterbury's Ilam Campus Gallery was created by Lowe during her Olivia Spencer Bower Award year.[6]
Lowe also tutors at Ara Institute of Canterbury in Art & Design[7].
