Kingdom of Dust: Beheading of Adam Smith, also known as Hostage, is a 2011 Iraq War drama film directed and written by Heath Jones, who is also the director of Grace. It is based on events surrounding the foreign hostages in Iraq.

Synopsis[edit]

New Yorker Adam David Smith grew up in Delaware. He is said to be a consultant for the U.S.-based construction giant the Robertson Group. In November 2005, the 43-year-old was kidnapped by members of the Swords of Truth in Iraq. Imprisoned in a Baghdad basement, he was forced to read letters demanding the withdrawal of U.S. and British forces or be decapitated. The film portrays the "intimate" relationship between the hostage and his captors.

Cast[edit]

  • Elyes Gabel[1] as Ahmed who is eager to kill Adam prior to the 48-hr deadline
  • Stephen Hogan as Adam
  • Christopher Simon as Fras to whom Adam offered ransom of $250,000.
  • Alyy Khan[2] as Dakheel who debated the nature of the war and religion with Adam
  • Dhaffer L'Abidine as Shakir

Production[edit]

In 2005, English expatriate Heath Jones, a former member of Britain’s Royal Air Force, saw a beheading video on the Internet and decided to make this movie to "re-sensitize people to the effects of violence."[3]

With footage from BBC Motion Gallery and Getty Images, the movie was filmed at Shepperton Studios of England.

Release[edit]

As a resident of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, the director screened his film on Feb 17-18, 2011 at Cinematique, a local cinema dedicated to art film. There are various streaming options and a Blu-ray version.

Reception[edit]

Journalist Justin Richards gave 2.5 out of 5 stars for the film saying, "The acting overall is decent."[4]
